I'm reviewing Steam games in alphabetical order and you can watch my review here: https://youtu.be/2nEMMCHvlOA Prefer to read? Overdrive is an interesting genre mash-up of bullet-hell, twin-stick shooter and roguelike mechanics. Unfortunately, for every thing the game does right, it also does something wrong. It boils down to the upgrade system not having enough meaningful choices that add to the gameplay experience. It's a great idea for a progression system, but having to choose between 3 identical upgrades where the only difference is that one has higher numbers than the others does not make for engaging or empowering player choice. If the upgrade system was reworked, more level variety and bosses added, this game could be something great. As it stands, it's a missed opportunity.5 found this helpful
I had the opportunity to discover the next game from the same developer (Project Operator) at Strasbourg's Indie Game Contest and I wanted to give a try to this first title. For this price, I would just say go! Get ready for very efficient (and addictive) gameplay mechanics. I wanted to test it for 10 minutes and oops, 1 hour was gone lol A special mention to the sound design and the excellent soundtrack!4 found this helpful
A fantastic game that takes ideas, some tried and tested and some that are so simple you wonder why no one thought of them before and mashes them up in a hugely enjoyable way that turns the tired old SHMUP formula into something really new and fresh that mixes up the challenges but always leaves you in control of how to proceed. Veterans of the genre aren't going to find this the biggest challenge, but for those of us with only average reactions, this is great fun.1 found this helpful
