What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise the game's charming 80s aesthetic, creative puzzle design, and genuine effort in its presentation, with particular highlights being the nostalgic atmosphere, clever story twist, and quirky humor that give it heart despite its modest scope. However, the game is consistently criticized for severely lacking accessibility options (no subtitles, sitting/standing toggle, or locomotion alternatives), having clunky VR controls limited to teleportation and snap turning, repetitive music, and technical issues like disappearing puzzle pieces, making it feel dated even among free VR escape
Gameplay and Features
It is disturbing to think that this game was out in the same year as the Valve Index (2019), and one year before Half-Life: Alyx. For someone to consider this a viable commercial product, one must be really desperate. Seriously. Try and do a steam search for tags VR + escape room + free to play; you'll find at least half a dozen titles with better controls, better graphics, better story, better gameplay, better puzzles and even better production value. The game has no settings and it only allows teleport locomotion (at least it's not node-based) and snap turning with fading. It's terrible for videos, so much that to record one I had to resort to turning physically as to not become too uncanny. You can see my gameplay here: https://youtu.be/FNRiRugKwZo Just to remind that a VR game is quite physical, and not having accessibility options is something that's very wrong to do. The way to interact with most things in the game is via a cellphone which you often drop in the floor and, of course, the game doesn't have a crouch button, so you need to fight the game to get it back. Oh, also, the collision boxes are terribly misaligned, to you will struggle…5 found this helpful
It's fun, took me about little over an hour to complete. Recommend when it's on sale. Pro - Played via Virtual Desktop + Quest 3 and it worked fine. - Music is good if you like synthwave. It adds to the theme and you can pause it if you want. - Being able to call for hints without it affecting gameplay is good. - Puzzles are fun and 80's themed Con - Only teleportation movement which I find annoying. - No accessibility options such as standing/sitting position gameplay - There's a bit of jank when it comes to picking up items or pushing buttons
(gifted by a friend) i liked this game but wont recommend it. here are the reasons why i liked it. i can see there was a lot of heart and effort put into this game. the models look very nice and the music (while repetitive) is nostalgic and some of the cassette names made me giggle. i was pleasantly surprised by the robot rap and dance at the end. i also enjoyed how eyerollingly cheesy the dialogue was. on to why i wont recommend this game. there are no accessibility setting at all. no sitting/standing option, no subtitles, no slow turning, just joystick point and teleport and snappy turn. as another reviewer said, they had to rely primarily on body movement to be facing in the direction they wanted. i was particularly annoyed at the fact that i couldnt hold items in both hands and teleport/move. i did not enjoy having to go back and forth for items i would 100% be able to get in one trip in other games. i wish you were able to toggle some visual effects and adjust the brightness it did feel a bit short and at the end i found myself thinking "that's it?". 76 minutes in game total and im pretty sure i was sitting idle doing something else for at least 6 of those minutes the pu…
A Totally Tubular Escape Room
Escape rooms are a natural fit for VR. But Paranormal Detective: Escape from the 80s deserves credit for not only making a good escape room, but also offering something refreshingly different. I didn’t grow up in the 80s, so I’m not particularly nostalgic for that era. Still, much of the pop culture I enjoy is either from the 80s or heavily inspired by it. This game nails that retro vibe: stepping into an old-school bedroom, using period-specific gadgets, spotting plenty of easter eggs, and even playing a few cleverly adapted minigames feels like entering a time capsule. The story is simple, but it has a really clever twist — particularly in how it blends live-action performances with gameplay. I won’t spoil it, but it’s definitely one of the most unique parts of the experience. If you’re an achievement hunter, be aware: a few achievements tied to the Bomb It! arcade game can be a bit frustrating. The difficulty isn’t just about skill — because of random bomb and drive placements, some runs can feel unwinnable before reaching 50 points (and the achievement). It’s not enough to ruin the game or make completion unbearable, but it’…
Not garbage. This game is pretty fun. its short, its quirky, the voice acting is bad, but its fun. It has a charm that many games lack. Give it a shot, I doubt you'll regret it.
Worthless. Puzzle on the wall has pieces just disappear whether you put them in the puzzle or just on a table.
