Set in the early twentieth century in Russia, Pechka tells the tale of a young man called Petyr who is blackmailed into working for the Japanese, gaining intelligence on Korea and carrying out assassinations on Korean and Joseon targets. Even though Petyr is a Joseon man himself, he doesn’t associate himself with any particular country, and he struggles through life shackled to the demands of his evil boss, until guilt and shame start to surface, sending Petyr into a spiraling sense of worthlessness. Pechka is a 2D adventure with many historical references, based on true events. Pechka is an emotional, gripping historical narrative chock-full of interactions with both fictional and real figures, collectible educational facts, and player choices that ultimately decide how Pyotr's story concludes. With its fittingly somber atmosphere, the game offers a window into the livelihoods of the Joseon people living in early-20th-century Russia. I found the main cast to be especially memorable, compelling me to go through each of 10 possible endings to see how they go on with their lives past the plot's events. The female characters, especially, are surprisingly well designed and written. The game has some grammatical errors, bugs, and odd dialogical pauses due to its original mobile release having in-app purchases, but I was able to look past those throughout my playtime. I will note the story requires a fair amount of time to complete and does not have a skip/auto button or save states; this may deter some players. The game is 3 chapters long, spanning 162 episodes; it took me nearly 20 hours to complete my first run.
