Important: on more recent systems, the game may suffer from severe lag. At least on desktop, I solved the issue by locating the file "usagi.exe" in the game directory and running it as administrator. If you were around freeware gaming and the nascent indie scene in the early 2000s, you may at least have heard of [b]Return of Egypt[/b], often known as "Moses Kicks Egyptian Ass". It was a short Metroidvania of remarkable quality for its time, centered around an old hero who, still in excellent shape 100 years after his original heroic deeds as a young man, had to settle the score with a demonic entity once and for all, which also meant butting heads with a few Egyptian deities. I only recently found out that it also had a special version subtitled [b]Two Stories[/b], which lets you play as another character. Not long after its release, the developer changed name to Krobon Station and kept making games, eventually leading to this one, originally published episodically in the mid-2010s before receiving this enhanced Steam release. Pharaoh Rebirth+ is a charming 2D action-adventure that takes the familiar foundations of a Metroidvania and gives them a wonderfully eccentric archaeological theme. Instead of relying on a grim hero or conventional fantasy setting, the adventure follows Dr. Jonathan Banfield, a renowned treasure hunter who happens to be a rabbit. The premise sounds deliberately absurd, yet the game treats it as the foundation for a surprisingly cohesive journey filled with Egyptian ruins, supernatural curses, hidden treasures, unusual characters, platforming, combat, and exploration. It was developed by KROBON station and Vaka Game Magazine, with Vaka Game Magazine serving as publisher. Jonathan's expedition begins after discovering Amshear, a legendary Egyptian oasis filled with archaeological artifacts. His search is interrupted by former companion Andre Betancourt, whose reckless actions eventually result in an ancient sarcophagus being opened. This releases an evil force and leaves both characters cursed to die within seven days. i got this game for like $2.50 and i do not recommend this to anyone, even if it was free. it's just too frustrating and succeeding doesn't feel rewarding, just a relief that i'm done with it. i'm saying that as someone who likes difficulty. the game feels fake difficult (invisible pit of spikes and bad balancing type stuff). 1st thing to clarify, this isn't really a metroidvania. there is a level select screen. yes, you can go to previous levels once you gain new movement abilities, but it's not like you have an interconnected world to discover. combat is not fun, bosses are frustrating with minimal tells/reaction time, and death feels upsetting due to game design/controls rather than that 'ah, yeah i messed up there' feeling. many things instant kill you (like spikes). adding onto this is the 8 second death to respawn transition that adds up and makes me feel like i'm wasting my time. there is also not a good checkpoint system, so death can frequently mean losing progress and having to play through annoying parts again. one thing about this game that appealed to me (other than me being a metroidvania nut) is the treasure system. it reminded me of 'the great cave offensive' fro…

I'm only 90 minutes in or so but this game has been a freaking blast. I heard this game was the best metroidvania from Team Ladybug and so far I have to agree. Fun level design, good controls, rewarding exploration, challenging but nothing too bad so far. Will update if something drastically changes after completing the game but I can't see that happening. Highly recommend for any metroidvania fans. I would elaborate but just believe me on this one. I'm super picky.

I absolutely love this game. It's a very fun Metroidvania with a lot going for it in terms of level design, items to collect, and just overall good gameplay. The plot is admittedly weak but there's a lot of good humor and the characters are extremely likeable and charming, and honestly I'm a little disappointed they never showed up anywhere else, I want to see more of them. Biggest complaint besides the weak story is the driving section is just...the worst. The absolute worst.
