About Phoning Home

✦ AI summary

Guide two stranded robots across a hostile alien world full of environmental puzzles, combat encounters, and crafting challenges as you search for a way to contact home. Uncover the mysteries of an ancient alien civilization while protecting your eccentric companion ANI in this atmospheric blend of exploration, action, and mystery that features stunning dynamic environments from frozen peaks to scorching deserts.

You play ION, a young exploration unit on a mission to secure natural resources. When you crash-land on an alien planet your ship is almost completely destroyed. Not only do you have to survive in a strange new world full of dangers, but to have even a hope of escape you must find a way to contact your home planet for help.

With only your ship’s A.I. for company, you set out to explore your new home. On your journey you encounter ANI, a small, stranded service unit who identifies as female. ANI is the first to admit she’s a bit mad, but she is also a valuable resource, and it soon becomes clear that there will be no escape without her.

And so, the two of you begin a journey that neither of you is prepared for, on a planet where even the laws of nature seem not to apply. A journey in which ION and ANI must face the strangest of all possible challenges if they are to have any hope of living to tell their own story.

FEATURES

  • Explore a new frontier. Large open environments with realistic environmental effects – from time-of-day lighting to dappled forests and snow-covered mountains, to volcanoes, canyons, deep oceans and scorching deserts – you must find your way.
  • Experience a story with living (but not breathing) characters, brought to life by voice actors.
  • Survive harsh weather conditions and temperatures – and protect ANI at all costs!
  • An intriguing mix of exploration, logic and action gameplay.
  • Create portals to traverse the landscape.
  • Fight – or find ways to avoid combat.
  • Craft improvements and critical tools from resources found in the environment.
  • Discover the remnants of an alien civilization, decrypt their language and restore their technology.
  • Enjoy a beautiful soundtrack.

Be warned. Phoning Home starts easy, but gets quite challenging in the later stages of the game. Can you leave the planet?

At first is seems as a cute game. But even in the first minutes you can feel the little annoyances that will come later. Resources don't renew, so you might end up with a bunch useless items and not be able to finish the quest. You lack sensors, so the only one you have (apart your eyes) is the hull damage. Lack of logic in world-building makes plot holes bigger than the one in your ship (they say you represent highly intelligent species able of interstellar travel - and everyone act like bunch of kids from a movie stranded on an desolate island). And this is labelled as open-world... but the game is about going from A to B and then back to A. There is nothing open in here except that vast nothingness you're forced to pass back and forth with a very annoying companion. If you like dumb linear escort missions in a cute environment - go for this game. Otherwise spend your time on something better.

Wont let you climb areas you area clearly supposed to climb. Game has a very very dumb mechanic that pushes your character about 20 feet away from whatever you were trying to climb. Instead if simply blocking off parts of the map they dont want you to access, they added this dumbass feature that prevents you from doing what you are SUPPOSED TO DO. Mission has you climb a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rock with a portal at the top. But you cannot climb the rock without getting pushed 20 feet back because of some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanic. EDIT 1: Managed to go back to the first portal to get back to the desert. This allowed me to progress further. The climbing mechanics are still garbage. I refuse to let it stop me from progressing and finishing this game though. Overall good but this one mechanic needs to be fixed. Its an open world let the people explore properly. I beat the game in spite. Was enjoyable ill admit but that one mechanic was very frustrating. Jumping was unpolished. Otherwise a good game.
