I’m a sucker for anything with dinosaurs and metroidvanias are one of my favorite genres to play, so on those merits alone Primal Planet seemed worth my attention. Boy did it surpass my expectations. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the superb and expressive animations. It’s a joy just to look at how things move. Hopping about is responsive and natural, so I quickly got to moving about with ease. After some scripted sequences to establish the stakes (which is very well done) I get to exploring the world… and what a cool place to explore. Let me tell you about the time I stumbled on a T-Rex, ran from it through a herd of panicking stegosaurs, ran into a cave where I discovered a giant crocodile who I led out to the T-Rex and merrily left them to fight things out. Or the time I came upon a den of sleeping velociraptors high up in some cliffs. Or when I figured out that I could ride a dolphin. Or when I learned that eating raw meat would make me vomit uncontrollably. These unscripted moments are what made the game a delight for me. There’s no hand-holding when it comes to progressing, but it was easy enough to intuit where to go and exploring new sections of the map was o…

Fun game - played on Steam Deck. (The hours are probably inaccurate because the Steam Deck often counts hours incorrectly.) I beat the game but did not 100% it. The game is not a traditional Metroidvania in that you buy upgrades with skill points. The exploration is satisfying, and there should be more games like this with dinosaurs in them!

A lovingly detailed world that you simply want to explore down to the last corner. Combined with a simple yet emotionally gripping story. The gameplay reminds me of the games from my childhood. All in all, a perfectly rounded game that I enjoyed every minute of.

I had a blast playing this game. It was difficult to figure out how to progress, but that kinda goes with the genre.

Fun pixel art metroidvania with an emotional story. On linux at least, seems to be an occasional bug where the game will recognize more or less controllers than are actually connected, meaning inputs are either doubled or are no accepted. Relaunching usually fixes this. Aside from that, great game. 8/10
