Appealing as the idea of battling Cthulhu in a bullet hell shooter can be, I found [b]Project Starship[/b] too chaotic, not helped by the play area feeling very cramped. By the end of a run, you'll likely have to put a weight on the slow motion button because it's the only way for your eyes to make out anything. The graphics, besides being amateurish, are often unclear, with some enemies not standing out over backgrounds; near the end, the first time I didn't even realize I was inside some canyon and I was losing energy because I was crashing into the walls, also because there were no such obstacles beforehand. The random generation only results in levels that, even if lasting a few minutes each, feel too long for the little variety they offer. I have to commend some bullet barrages that seem impassable at first sight but in truth have small spaces where you can maneuver with the small weak point of your ship, but really too little to save a game that can be nice for a few minutes of mindless shooting, before moving on to the many better shmup alternatives on Steam.

Project Starship is a fun little retro bullet hell that nails the 90s arcade aesthetic with its chunky pixel graphics, CRT filter option, and genuinely catchy chiptune soundtrack. The procedural enemy and powerup spawns keep each run feeling fresh, and the slow-down mechanic gives you just enough control to weave through the chaos. That said, the randomness is a double-edged sword — some Mad Events feel borderline unfair, and it can be hard to tell what hit you when the screen fills with projectiles. For a dollar, though, you're getting a surprisingly feature-rich package with multiple modes including boss rush and hardcore, and the energy of the game is hard not to enjoy.
