"Radii" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. On the upside this "platformer" isn't quite as lazy as most of them, even though it fails directly on technical quality merits. This minimalist/pixelcrap platformer doesn't follow the usual Mario Bros ripoff formula, but instead has you navigating puzzle platform levels with gimmicks around your momentum, limited numbers of jumps, so you need to manage your trajectory, momentum and energy levels to work out if you're going to bounce to where you need to go or not... this can be really challenging, but the incredibly weak technicals are probably what turned gamers away from this. That and the developer didn't bother finishing the game after they saw nobody wanted it. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of imm…

I've played this game for like 9 hrs and it's amazing. The graphics are amazing, same for the music. I love this game. I recommend it, this is really good. You can literally feel the tension and the world around you as you play. Incredible.

I had already published a review before completing the game.[/i] [i]Radii[/i] is a beautiful Metroidvania-style platformer using momentum as its primary component for movement. Next to the unique (in this genre) way to move around, the ambience is the crucial piece of the puzzle that makes this game so memorable. The calming, minimal but defined visual atmosphere is harmonizing gorgeously with the melancholic and threatening soundtracks. Character and world design become secondary, yet important, performers of the experience [i]Radii[/i] offers. While visually most is still and sterile, audibly it is quite the opposite: vivid and emotional. Visually and auditive components are characterized by a gloomy mood that creates the feeling of unease. As a small, marble-like robot, it's up to you to conquer the almost empty science fiction building full of challenges (starting with the lack of a proper tutorial) and threats. Even though this game isn't a marketed as a metroidvania, it is one. The game is challenging and can feel a little unfair even as a lot of attacks kill the player instantly and save stations are sparse. The bosses are good for how the movement system but need some work. The platforming feels good and natural, and with additional settings (like one to display the currently held direction on the left stick) I bet it will feel really good to play. Currently, most areas in the game don't differ much in theme and graphics except for music and obstacles which I hope to see improved. The controls for the game could be better. The game is recommended to be played with a controller which is great for movement but horrible for aiming. It's so tricky to aim with the right stick that I switched to a keyboard and mouse at some parts. If you have a Steam Controller, it is perfect for this game.
