About reIterate()

"reIterate(), much like the channel that spawned it, is a lesson in game design" - RoseTintedSpectrum

reIterate() is a fast-paced 2D platformer with a focus on precision and fluidity, with a strong contrasting aesthetic and a retro-future soundtrack.

reIterate() has a classic purity that’s all about getting from the beginning to the end, navigating familiar but challenging hazards like spikes, spikes, some spikes, and also, some spikes. They rotate, they spin, they shoot out at you, and sometimes, they just sit there.

Along the way, you’ll master wall-jumping, double-jumping, bouncing, springs, vanishing platforms, moving platforms and even portals as you leap from level to geometric level, moving along, up and down the screen to put in your best possible performance over 60 challenging and varied stages.

Then you can leap into the dedicated Speedrun Mode to really test your abilities and (possibly) become a Twitch sensation with your mad speedrunning skills.

reIterate() is ultimately designed to represent a game from a theoretical retro console that never actually existed. Something old and familiar, yet also a little bit different and strange. And always, always fun to play.

FEATURES:
  • More than 60 hand-crafted levels, designed with a meticulous philosophy
  • Optional collectibles for that extra challenge
  • Unlockable backstory segments and fully skippable cutscenes to add lore and depth to the experience
  • Dedicated Speedrun Mode
  • A much harder Black Edition mode, where every level has been remixed and redesigned to push you to your limits.
  • Dedicated 'Time Slow' for accessibility. Stuck on a particular bit? Slow down time to a third of its regular speed, and take your time with the challenge.
  • A Jukebox system, putting you in charge of your background music playlist
  • Geometric shapes and simple contrast built together into a pleasing aesthetic
  • Uncapped framerate for silky smoothness
  • And more, probably!

Overall this game is fine, it's fully functional and it's an achievement to develop and publish a game solo. But it needs more refining if the goal is to find success with a broader audience. I was interested in this game after watching the devlogs. As a fellow game developer, I love supporting developers who are able to ship a product. The devlogs were well produced and entertaining and I'm generally a fan of 2D platformers and I'm a big fan of schmovement, so I thought I'd enjoy this game. In summary, I did not. The problems start instantaneously: every time you start the game, you're presented with a loading menu that does not remember your decisions across sessions. So every time I start the game I have to re-bind to WASD, turn off the sfx, and then I can attempt to start the game. Even that, though, requires you to wait through two (I believe) unskippable scenes which add no value to the game. I did say I have to turn the sfx off, and that's not an opinion, I think it's required. The sound effects, which are lightly modified bfxr outputs, are not able to be tolerated with decent quality headphones. I've made this mistake in games I've made before, where I believe some bfxr/sf…

Let's make a negative review sandwich: - The creator of the game, is a gem of a person. - Controls could be tighter. It made the game feel harder than I couldn't tap my controller and make really small adjustments. I'm not saying the controls are floaty, but they could tighten up. - On falling platforms, I'd try to jump, hear the jump sound effect, but not jump. Not a big issue on most levels, but there's at least one where this was driving me crazy. - There's one level with four boxes in it. You jump straight up to and try to double jump, but just being close to the wall, you double jump. Kind of odd behavior. - Odd difficulty spikes. Level 40 was a second hardest level after level 69. - Game is too difficult for old people like me. - Guns don't also have to be spikes. You get used to it, but looking at guns you'd think you could jump on them. Could have been more creative there. - Issues where the joystick didn't work super well. I sometimes had to close the game and start it back up. - Saving issues where you might have to repeat a level. Not always a big deal, but it sucks if you get taken back to a hard level. That really only happened once. - The game has a slight delay wh…
