Raging Bytes

The concept is what drew me in: A story driven, rpg system-based Zombie game. The story is fine, unfortunately the combat is very basic aside from the ability to push back zombies so they don't one-shot you up close. Another review where I think an in between rating is more accurate than a positive or negative. I'll side with positive in this case as I got it on sale and I'd like to see more attempts at this kind of thing in future.

Kemco... now that's a Company name I haven't heard in a LONG while. I fondly remember their collection of niche games back in the 90s in the good old days of console gaming, But, to think that they, EDIT: my mistake, PUBLISHED a game like THIS... A turn based RPG set in a The Walking Dead-like world, complete with that whole protagonist waking up in an abandoned hospital starting sequence. This game needs to be more well known, at least to those actually enjoy turn based combat. A bit too easy in normal mode but if you're a glutton for punishment, I recommend the harder modes when starting out. Naturally, I went with the normal mode to enjoy the storytelling of this alternate Walking Dead-like universe. With all those games with all that "realistic graphics", pixel art styled games like this easily stands out. The turn based battles actually do require a bit of a more strategic approach, especially in the harder difficulty settings. The normal mode tends to get too easy, since the convenient healing system did not cost a precious turn and supplies of it were plentiful in normal mode. TLRD; Cute lil title that just needed more. 6/10 Pro's: - Artstyle. It's not pushing any boundaries nor is it doing the pixel-art style super well but it is incredibly charming. - Story. Now the story is kinda all over the place. Harkening to a space program known as The Saturn Program but it's all to do with the moon? Not sure if there were translation issues but the cohesive parts of the stories, as well as the characters, were fairly well done. - Theme/Setting. It really does nail that apocalyptic-event sorta feel. - Combat. It's simple but with some twists. It's essentially standard turn-based combat but with distance as an element. Enemies often are far away so you wittle their HP down and they (mostly) can't attack until they come in range. This allows you to do a risk/reward melee hit. There's also an early feel of saving ammo for your firearms so, at least early on, the combat feels good although you'll get to the point where you can just 1-shot most enemies and the game loses any sense of depth. Con's: - Length. It's about 6 hours long. It doesn't flesh out the story or characters enough. - Content. There's minimal exploration so it does come across as a very linear tit…

Perfect encapsulation of survival horror, lite-RPG, and movie references. A little easy but the boss fights can be randomly super hard if you don't have enough ammo saved.

Just a good game love it

nice quirky rpg that's like a big love letter to zombie media (walking dead/28 days later, dawn of the dead, day of the dead, resident evil, etc.). The only issue I have is that for it's neat concepts and clever battle system there's not too much to it in the end outside of the basic stuff. A linear story (a decent and good story thankfully) of survival in a zombie world that's roughly set in the 1970's/early-1980's. Hope we get a follow-up/sequel.
