Reignbreaker

This is basically Hades, but in a post-apocalyptic Mad Max world. And it's pretty fun! I'm actually having a blast so far, though there are, admittedly, a few nit-picks. But first, the good stuff! The [b]GOOD[/b] Stuff - Hades-esque combat is tight enough - The Javelin is a pretty unique cast-type thingy - The environment is flashy and awesome in that Blood Dragon kind of way - I like the [strike]protagonist[/strike] antagonist - Voice acting is pretty good - The enemy variety is enough to not feel too stale The [b]OK-ish[/b] Stuff - You don't have as many growth options as Hades - Your fists are your main weapon throughout the game - Javelin types don't change up your gameplay significantly - Reusing bosses... is a meh? It's kinda meh, but they do it in an interesting/challenging way at least. Essentially, this is Hades without reversible mirror traits (only one side), no keepsakes, no Charon buffs, no Chaos gates, no group of NPCs to interact with (only TWO in the hub, and one of them doesn't speak), no meaningful differences between weapons, and very minimal lore. It's Hades-lite. Hades the Barebones edition. It's fine though. I wish they could have done a bit more, but it…

Reignbreaker; decidedly not one for this genre. Hades 1 + 2 (honourable mention to Bastion) remain the champs. If you've already played Bastion or the hadeses, this is very much more of the same. the mechanics have a distinctly unfinished feel, and I'm pretty sure the relic artefacts have not been balanced correctly. The art and styling of this game is delightful; it is genuinely a major reason I've continued to play past the refund window. The voice acting for most characters is good - Clefs lines grow stale and can feel disjointed. the dev team at Studio Fizbin very clearly had a solid idea, and if they hadn't been shafted so badly, this could have been a major player in the genre - instead its a fitful hallucination of what could be. Grab it on sale, if you must.

[i]Mid-Tier[/i] Strong music and visual appeal; however gameplay falls a little short. Features a fairly simple game economy. 1 inter-run currency (keys); 1 cumulative-run currency (gems). Javelin (Weapons) and there modifiers are poorly balanced. This is the main form of gameplay variety and unfortunately most of the available options are simply underpowered relative to the blast modifier option; leaving you with little reason to select the majority of the alternates. Additional, during combat there are slow motion invulnerable executions you can perform for some of the enemy types. I found these ended up hurting the ability for the enemy to pressure the player during many encounters. There are level time challenges to unlock new Javelins; but the game fails to tell you what the maximum time limit is. You only know that a time challenge is active by the fact there is a count-up clock displayed on HUD. Fine idea but not well realized. Studio Fizbin (developer) shut down right at release; so its very unlikely that Reign Breaker gets the necessary improvements needed to be at the top of the genre. As it currently stands it sits squarely in "just ok" territory.

10/10 Game! First of all, what a hidden gem, I did not expect it to be this high quality. Combat is fun, fast paced, and punchy. Really fun rogue-like that lets you experiment with all sort of cool mods (there are no bad ones! It depends on what you are going for and how much synergy it has with your current set of mods when you pick up another one :D ) It has really appealing visuals that are almost "comic book-ish" and a sound track that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slaps. What else could you possibly want! Worth the price 100%, plus they often have deals with other great games when you buy this one and vice versa.
