Robbotto

Robbotto is a basic asset/template flip slapped together using NW.js (a quick way to identify shovelware/cash grab garbage). It's a simple 2D retro pixel platformer of extremely low quality. Resolution and controls are locked, and the terrible pixel "art" all disqualify this from having any merits as a serious PC game. The laughably bad quality, the way this was dumped into cheap game bundles like DailyIndieGame, and the ludicrous $10 price tag all cement the position that this is just a cheap nasty cash grab, and should be avoided.

When writing this review, I've played about 25 levels. The principle of the game is pretty simple - electrify an enemy robot, spray water on it so it short circuits, do this with all robots per level. If you touch an enemy or a shot, you die instantly. 3 lives, infinite continues. If you lose all 3 lives, the current level and enemies will be reset. Is it fun? Yes, levels are short and varied enough to make it fun to play. Level difficulty varies a bit, but after defeating a boss (they are a bit tricky, as they should be), getting a slightly easier level is a treat. Worth noting about movement etc, the game has a pixel graphics aesthetic but you can move "sub pixel".

[b][Disclaimer: A pre-release copy was given by the devs for me to review at Save or Quit.][/b] Hearkening back when videogames lived or died by their gameplay as they had no narrative, no soapbox messages and no additional elements to pad themselves out, RobbOtto—or Robbotto, the naming scheme isn’t clear, so I’m going with RobbOtto like the names—reminds us what games used to be. Even without having officially played Bubble Bobble outside of an emulator, the influence is unmistakable, but don’t take that description as if RobbOtto is a mere imitation with no surprises. The simplicity of the game’s audio and visuals, as well as its limited mechanics, disguise what an addictive experience you can find here alone or with a friend. RobbOtto may largely borrow the general format, but the gameplay manages to be distinct enough as well as innovate on the concept—however, it remains a game that largely resembles something you could play, technical limitations aside, alongside the NES classics. There are two questions you must ask yourself before you purchase RobbOtto: Are you interested in a modern take of Bubble Bobble, and is ten dollars a fair asking price despite not having online …
