Second Samurai

Second Samurai is an ancient game from 1994. It's a whopping 30 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. Second Samurai is just another rejected 2D platformer for the Sega Mega Drive. You may be wondering why a crap rejected Sega Mega Drive game belongs on Steam and the answer is, you're right, it doesn't. This is another abandonware cash grab by Piko Interactive, who swindle their hands onto old abandoned/broken/dead games then try to swindle Steam gamers into paying them for someone else's old abandoned game. Ethical? Nope. Now, you might be thinking "But Second Samurai came out for the Amiga in 1991!!!", and you're right, it did, but it was rehashed, with different graphics and gameplay changes, and dumped lazily onto the Sega Mega Drive. Game reacts fast on keys and character move/jump/attacks well, surprisingly this game is playable. You need to break all the vases to proceed to the next area, vases can be hidden on top of a tree, or under a giant rock, the idea is to hit everything so you don't miss out on any. Can't say I enjoyed the game but I bought this game for that dino-riding scene in the store page, which is a real gameplay during a chase. The first level is not hard to complete however the rest are tests for precise landing and precise attacking, I hardly made it to 4th level but somehow, the game freezes and corrupts the save file, I gave up here knowing that I've experienced most of the content. I loved this game since childhood. However, if you're releasing it on steam and expect THAT amount as a base price for an ancient game then at the very least make it worth getting. It looked better on my ancient TV back when I was playing it on the Mega Drive! And it looked perfect on emulators. Here though, there's absolutely no screen resolution options, no controls customization, R1 jumps for some odd reason and I had to change the controls through steam controller layout options. No menu to quit to title screen, or to even close the game! No choice but to AltF4... and most importantly, no achievements and no Remote Play Together feature. I have hope that this release will get updated someday and include these features. But for now, I am refunding it because it's pointless to own it on steam. I'd rather stick to my old Mega Drive cartridge
