Secrets of the Middle Ages

"Secrets of the Middle Ages" is another GameMaker Studio asset flip from serial copy+paste infringers, Phoenixxx Games. All these guys do is rip off game templates and projects from the Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio marketplace, change the name and a few cosmetic details, and try to scam people into paying for someone else's work on Steam. They have run asset flip scams dozens of times, and this is no exception (just look at their other games on Steam). It's nothing but a cash grab. This time they've ripped off a basic template for a 2D mobile app tier HOG (of considerably worse quality than one of the free Artifex Mundi mobile apps). GameMaker Studio itself is a terrible game construction kit, and this asset flip shows just how bad things can get when templates/tutorials/demos from that construction kit get dumped on Steam as complete games. Asset flips and other "Fake games" (as Valve calls them) are harmful to the industry, because they pollute the marketplace and reduce the visibility and exposure needed by genuine indie developers. In line with dishonest asset flippers, the game was dumped immediately at launch into DailyIndieGame shovelware bundles. The ridiculous $10 USD…

I'm really on the fence with this game, and it can be completed under 1 hour. The graphics are cute and well drawn, the objects identifiable and (perhaps too) easy to find: they are always displayed fully. The game consists of 4 scenes, each containing the same objects but arranged differently. You get 3 hints per scene. There are no misclick penalties, so you can drag the scene (holding down the mouse button) in a perpetual circle, in either direction. The music is relaxing but, unfortunately, in a very short loop. But there are 3 things about the game I don't like: 1) some objects are "mis-labeled": a "flashlight" is drawn as a lantern, a "brush" is drawn as small paintbrushes in a coffee cup, the "cup" looks to me like a trophy, etc. Not too many, but this game could be gone thru slight translation adjustments. 2) your progress within a scene is lost as soon as you return to the main menu. However, completing a scene unlocks the next scene. 3) there is a store (I dare you to find it!) where you can spend some money to get some other cat/dog; perhaps the idea was abandoned by the developer as I couldn't find a way to earn money!!! You have to find exactly the same (!!!) objects in four "locations", with the majority of objects just lying around on the floor.

Not a game, just a bug. Use arrow keys to activate messages like "Game completed". It's so silly. Don't buy this peace of ♥♥♥♥.

Did not like this game at all. Gave it a good try to see if there was something that I was missing. Finished the first level and was completely bored.
