Players appreciate the free price and Japanese-themed aesthetic, with some praising it as a labor of love, but most criticize the janky controls, overly punishing difficulty with limited lives, and poor level design that requires memorization to avoid instant-death spikes. The camera being too close and lack of basic features like control rebinding are cited as significant polish issues that detract from an otherwise interesting concept.
First, it's free! So give it a shot ^~^ You can tell it's a labor of love. I'll tell ya the Introduction
with the Tea Ceremony and the Attack on the Castle
all felt fantastic and I was getting really jazzed about getting deeper into the game. Then came the spikes. I had read that the controls were janky, and they are, but you get used to it and it works out, BUT the jank just does not work with spike traps. If you so much as breath on that thing you are dead, and with only 8 lives to beat the entire game it's rather frustrating. My 2 major complaints is portions of the level design that are designed to kill you unless you have it memorized ahead of time. This ties into my second point, that the Camera is just WAY too close to the character. It feels claustrophobic and for a rapid platformer, not being able to see 3 inches in front of you where a minor misstep could 1 shot you against some troll placement of a spike trap made me stop playing. I really wanted to go on! There's a lot of heart here and I appreciate the dev putting it out, and putting it out for free! Thank you~ Give it a shot for funzies, but keep your expectations moderated <33 found this helpful
Sengoku - A Time of Warriors and Demons is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This feels like a student project or something. Yes, there's a cool Japanese looking theme, but no, it's not followed up by compelling or interesting gameplay. It's unpolished and clunky. Heck, the developers warn you in the sales blurb that they game might not work for you because they didn't have the basic technical skills to add a control/keybinding menu. And if you can't work out how to do that very basic, elementary and necessary element of making and publishing a game, maybe you shouldn't be doing it, because it's us gamers who have to try to filter through the deluge of garbage, badly made games like this. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. …2 found this helpful
This game could've benefited from a lot more playtesting and less clunky controls. I'm dropping this and not picking it up again.2 found this helpful
Before I played Sengoku - A Time of Warriors and Demons, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
1 found this helpful
This game is great in all, but it is way to hard, tone down the bosses, and give them readable attacks
I like the game havent played much but I will definately try to beat it
