Sepia Tears is a compact romance visual novel that makes effective use of memory, regret, and emotional uncertainty to give a familiar anime-inspired premise considerably more substance than it initially appears to possess. The story follows Mark, a young man determined to suppress a particular memory, and Myra, the girl who brings that buried part of his past back into focus. Their search for an almost storybook version of romance gradually exposes the uncomfortable reality that relationships rarely develop according to idealized expectations. Rather than relying entirely on sweetness and predictable romantic encounters, the narrative mixes affection, awkwardness, comedy, mystery, and melancholy into a surprisingly thoughtful experience. The strongest aspect is its writing and character interaction. Mark's reluctance to confront his memories gives the story an immediate element of mystery, while Myra serves as more than a conventional romantic interest. Played outside of steam so that explains why I've fully completed it with only 10 minutes of playtime.. Very beautiful game, story feels nostalgic for some odd reason..

Sepia Tears is a romance visual novel that I ended up liking mostly because of the way it handles its characters. I play as Mark, a fairly normal high school student whose life gets complicated when Myra arrives and starts digging into a memory that he would rather forget. From there the story becomes a mix of romance, comedy and a bit of mystery, with most of the game being about getting to know the characters and seeing how their relationships develop. The basic setup is familiar, but I think the writing gives it enough personality to stand out. The characters are easily the best part for me. Mark actually has a personality, which I appreciate because it means I am not just playing as a completely blank character who says whatever I am thinking. Myra is the obvious focus, but the supporting cast also gets enough attention to make the school setting feel more alive. I especially like the way the dialogue can switch between genuinely emotional moments and really dry jokes. Some of the humour is deliberately silly, but there are enough quieter moments underneath it to stop the whole story from feeling like a parody of a romance visual novel. The story of this game is absolutely awe inspiring. I cannot recommend enough. :)
