Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Case of the Mystified Murderess

TD;DR: Not for player who only plays/played modern games. Great mystery that is not holding your hand and walking you to the solution. Great game. You are not guided through the solution. I struggled to reach the end, because i figured i would get a big thing (modern game logic), even if i had the story down in my head. So I ended up clicking around a lot, until I figured out I just needed to click the judge button :D It is definetly not a modern game, if you havent played any games from those times, or not familiar with any other games other than modern western games, it might be a bit difficult to find the groove for it. I had so much fun overall, ended it around 500 points because i clicked around so much. If it was a modern game, or a remaster, i would defiently want them to add more side stories/side quests almost. For example i was really curious about the message exchange in the newspaper between R. Ransford (Revrand maybe) and JM with the bible quote. I wanted to be able to follow those thorugh and get some kind of clue but overall I am happy with the amount of money i paid and the time I spent.

It's a deceptively simple Sherlock Holmes Visual Novel (FMV Style Game) with interactions where you send Scotland Yard and/or the Irregular Ones to go and find you information, then you present your case to the Judge but if you don't have ALL of the information the Case doesn't go ahead, and whilst that's a handy barometer to showcase whether or not you're on the right track it would be better if the game had a "bad end" where if you didn't find all the info the villain got away but I appreciate that wouldn't be in-keeping with The Master Detective

This is my first time playing a Sherlock Holmes CD mystery and, overall, I didn't like it. First, I'll note that it was broken for me as I could not access a key file entry. Every other file entry worked except for that one for some reason. Also, specific to this one, it's not too hard to figure out the general pattern of what was going on but one of the key details is ridiculous and there aren't really any hints pointing towards it. That said, I'm not sure I would enjoy other games in this series, either. The mechanics are pretty good (although when to investigate yourself vs sending the irregulars isn't very well delineated) but, for example, in one video you find a bank statement and I immediately realized it was very important and wanted to view it further but you can't pause or rewind, it's only on screen very briefly, and it doesn't go into your inventory so I replayed THE ENTIRE video three times but kept missing the screenshot and just gave up. I have no idea how people dealt with that clue back in the day and I'm worried the series contains similar clues hidden in the videos.

I played a bunch of these in the 90s- I enjoyed them enough. When I booted up Zojoi's remasters- I thought they hadn't done much to update them... sure, they ran on my modern PC, but what did they really change? They looked just like my memory of them. But then I made the mistake of actually comparing them to the CDs I still had! Great Scott! There is no comparison between the original video quality and the Zojoi version! These are really something. My memory was far to kind to the original release. Now my only sadness is that Zojoi has only upgraded 4 of the 9 original cases. Here's hoping another case drops soon!
