About Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Case of the Mummy's Curse

The London Times started it all – calling the murders the work of an ancient Egyptian curse. I accused the tabloid of capitalizing on the superstitions of the populace. Yet, three men were dead, with the wrappings of a 4000-year old mummy binding their fates together. I find it hardly plausible and daresay believe the answers lie within the fabrics of a far more mortal realm. Once again, I have called upon the good doctor to accompany me.

Zojoi teamed up with famed board game company Sleuth Times to reproduce the award-winning Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective video mysteries for Windows. This original titles was considered the pioneer products for emerging optical technologies and took advantage of the medium with full-motion video (FMV), intriguing storylines and fun game play. The restored retro game feature recaptured video, high-resolution graphics and strong storytelling and design.

Direct the famous Baker Street detectives through the fog-filled streets of London, and solve mysteries in a faithful adaptation of the board game that features:
  • 30 minutes or more of original video footage
  • Sherlock Holmes, his case companion, Dr. Watson, and over 20 additional characters (both trustworthy and unscrupulous!)
  • Full English subtitle support
  • Search the London Times for clues, peruse Holmes’ personal files, scour through the London Directory and receive hints from Watson himself
  • Present your findings to the Queen’s magistrate – and learn how you did against the master detective

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the charming FMV scenes and nostalgic appeal of this Sherlock Holmes visual novel, with praise for the video quality improvements in the remaster. However, most criticize the game for being very short, offering minimal actual gameplay, and having an overly obvious solution that discourages thorough investigation since the scoring system penalizes finding all clues.

It's a deceptively simple Sherlock Holmes Visual Novel (FMV Style Game) with interactions where you send Scotland Yard and/or the Irregular Ones to go and find you information, then you present your case to the Judge but if you don't have ALL of the information the Case doesn't go ahead, and whilst that's a handy barometer to showcase whether or not you're on the right track it would be better if the game had a "bad end" where if you didn't find all the info the villain got away but I appreciate that wouldn't be in-keeping with The Master Detective

I played a bunch of these in the 90s- I enjoyed them enough. When I booted up Zojoi's remasters- I thought they hadn't done much to update them... sure, they ran on my modern PC, but what did they really change? They looked just like my memory of them. But then I made the mistake of actually comparing them to the CDs I still had! Great Scott! There is no comparison between the original video quality and the Zojoi version! These are really something. My memory was far to kind to the original release. Now my only sadness is that Zojoi has only upgraded 4 of the 9 original cases. Here's hoping another case drops soon!

Brings back memory! Still remember when playing the classic Mac OS version on my iMac G3. Though everything is good, the game can be better if all clips are upscaled to either 1080p or 4K. Videos having 480p resolution shows pixelated images on my display.

I wanted to like this game, as I'm a fan of anything Holmes and enjoy old FMV games, but there really isn't much of a game here. It's an odd game that rewards you for playing as little of it as possible. You get a better score the less "clues" you need to solve the case, which functionally equates to you NOT following every lead or interviewing every suspect / expert. This might work well for the board game, but makes you feel like you are skipping most of the video game to get the best score (and the associated achievements). If you can get past this, many of the FMV scenes are charming and the costuming is nice. But you can easily finish this "game" (more of an interactive movie, really) in well under an hour. I would only recommend picking it up on sale or as part of a bundle if you're curious, but it's a pretty shallow experience overall. Not much here, but for a Sherlock completionist, might be worth a couple dollars just to see what it's about.
