Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind

This is a punishing game that doesn't give you much information about how to make the suffering stop.

Work of genius The King of Dragon Pass / Six Ages form a distinct form of turn-based strategy, offering a wildly different strategy gaming experience. There is a strong narrative, lore, mythos, and world building that make this is a unique game experience. Its a little hard to get into at first, but its wildly different and really really really good ultimately. I will get Six Ages 2, now that I beat Six Ages 1 and though I never beat King of Dragon Pass, now I feel confident to go back and beat it as well. This isn't going to a match for certain types of gamers, but if it is your kind of thing, then you could really really love this game.

Six Ages is a challenging game made up of narrative and management elements. It's a long game, and it is large enough that its story doesn't keep it from being fun to replay. I would recommend it if you have any interest in myths and cosmologies and want a game with a lot of lore.

This is a qualified buy. If you're into HeroQuest or Glorantha, absolutely you should buy. If you're not from that group, the qualification is that this is not a straightforward game, and a lot of the lore specific to playing this game well is something that you're going to have to read with the game. You don't need to bring things outside as the game's documentation is very solid. If you do not read and figure out how Riders and Wheels work, you can quickly find yourself into a death spiral. For those experienced with King of Dragon's Pass, there are some regressions from that game which are a bit disappointing. You cannot cross tulas to fight clans but those clans don't follow those rules and show up in your tula to go after you which I believe is patently unfair. You cannot displace clans from tulas. Even cheating, the computer just magically recruits enough swords on the other side that they're always good. Exploration is not rewarding unless you cheat and pre-warn yourself about where to explore (which is a major regression from KoDP where standard exploring without knowing is rewarding for the risk).
