A zelda-lite game where all you get is a shield!

In this lighthearted pastoral adventure, explore and fight your way through a vast and whimsical world with nothing but a magical shield at your side. Discover, unlock, and conquer dungeons in any order using power stones you collect along your travels before confronting a final source of evil.

A MAGICAL SHIELD

Your only weapon is your shield. Blocking enemy projectiles and abilities with it allows you to temporarily use them to your advantage. Pay attention to your surroundings as various obstacles can be overcome by using the right ones!

A NON-LINEAR WORLD

Skjoldur Story has a strong emphasis on non-linearity. Play at your own pace and wander a handcrafted overworld in whichever direction you choose. Dungeons you find can be opened in any order using power stones that are scattered across the overworld. The only exception is the final tower, which remains locked until everything else is completed.

DISCOVER HIDDEN AREAS

Stumble across secret rooms with hidden treasure or minigame-like areas that further you along your adventure in a fun rhythm-breaking way. Use any loot you find to purchase upgrades at various shops to help further you along your journey.

Recommended with one major caveat. Music's okay, story's whatever, I liked the art, the nonlinear world design is great, achievements are mostly fair, and a lot of the mechanics used are quite innovative and creative. Most of the puzzles were quite nice, but I'm saying most here because two of the mechanics stand out as AWFUL- the stupid barrel shuffle minigame and the final boss. The barrel shuffle minigame has the barrels move so fast by the second game that keeping track of them is genuinely hard... but that'd be fine even if it means that we'd lose if we blinked at the wrong time if there wasn't the issue with it being shuffled north to south, where most of a column can move up or down and conceal the movement of other barrels, meaning that it's very easy to lose track of the original barrel... and instead of being able to try again immediately, you have to keep on hitting barrels until you die from the bombs or get lucky, and if you die you're sent back to the start of the area. At least the area's optional... though that's definitely not obvious and the reward for beating the area is absolutely not worth it. The final boss made me really consider giving this game a no. It…

Video Review: https://youtu.be/EDBCLWa_5Fo 8.5/10 Skjoldur story developed by snoozing pixel, This classic zelda style game has you explore a vast world with nothing but a shield, face numerous foes, find mounts and hidden treasures and solve dungeons to reach the end.
Mechanics
Skjoldur story is like a classic zelda style game and it is with its wide-open map, dungeons, hidden caves and puzzles but the fighting mechanics take a Kirby inspired twist. Since all you have at your disposal is a shield you can hit enemies with it but if you block an enemies attack or kill said enemies, you will have their projectile for a small amount of time. Projectiles like slime, boomerangs and others that will help in defeating more foes but are also necessary in solving some of the puzzles in the game. It works very well together and expands the possibilities of puzzles.
Puzzles
Some puzzles I had done where simple like a “follow the cup” puzzle, or get enemy to attack a block, but then you add the items. A great show of the items is with boss fights where in the first boss I needed to use the boomerang to hit switches to bring his defenses down, or needing to use s…

An absolutely delightful little puzzle adventure with a cutesy retro style that evokes the style of classic Zelda games. The map is quite large with lots of fun environmental design, enemy variation, and interesting combat and puzzle mechanics that vary it up enough to keep it fresh. The dungeons are a particular treat, really requiring you to rack your brain a little to figure things out. Full disclosure: I did receive a key for this game.

It's an interesting adventure game with some great ideas that can be found on "metroidvania" games and some others that actually make the game feel fresh. Visually it looks great and the exploration as well as it's gameplay mechanics are great. There're only two aspects that bother me a little bit: 1. The aspect ratio of the game feels strange when you start playing, but I guess that's a design decision so in reality it's fine. 2.The combat system sometimes can feel unresponsive or lacking of feedback. Appart from that I don't see any other issues on the game at first as I really enjoyed playing it and solving some of the puzzles while exploring.
