SLAMMED!

Tell me you don't understand wrestling without telling me you don't understand wrestling. Written by someone who clearly just discovered a pro-wrestling thesaurus and the Wrestling Observer. Reads like a bad recap of a Road To Wrestlemania mode or Russo-Era WCW/TNA show with an even stranger insistence that every major thread somehow be a shoot. Not even worth a second run to see if the other routes are any better. Miserable experience.

This is the 40th CoG I've played...and it's in the top 10, which is pretty amazing for a CYOA about wrestling. I'm not a fan of wrestling. I don't know much about wrestling, beyond the tv show GLOW. And it doesn't matter because not only does this game surpass the source material, it actually makes me want to watch some wrestling now! The storytelling is truly great in a way vanishingly few games of its kind are and has a LOT of replayability. The only criticism I have is that the romances are its weak aspect, both in terms of quantity and quality. But everything else is superb. If you liked Choice of Robots, Tin Star, Choice of Magic, Tally Ho, etc, you'll love this game.

You go through a career starting from a collegiate wrestler all the way to the heights of nationwide super stardom. That’s if you can handle the physical, mental, and emotional demands of the industry. Slammed! was a pleasant surprise for me. I’d heard good things about it in passing, but I’ve never been a fan of wrestling. Not really. I had Slammed! on the back-burner of my Choicescript game catalogue for a long time because I just wasn’t enthused about playing an interactive wrestling novel. Which means it really says something that half-way through I was punching the air in excitement and shadow-boxing as I read and imagined the matches playing out in my mind’s eye. PROS: Love of the sport. Chikiamco clearly loves wrestling and it shows. More than that, they have done an incredible job of making that love infectious and spreading it to the reader. It's been an entertaining ride, but hot damn if as the protag you don't take a lot of L's in the life aspect of the game. Sometimes I didn't know if I was just making bad choices for the stats that I had high because I didn't quite understand the terminology or if it's just scripted that you sort of are in for a rough time no matter what you pick. Still, very well written and a fun time nonetheless.
