Song of Farca: Prologue

It should be mentioned that from what I've read this is a demo for Song of Farca, not a separate story, it's a chapter of the full game but you can get achievements separately. I wanted to like this one, I could excuse the kind of weird writing and the terrible Hollywood/CSI depiction of hacking, because sure, it's just a point & click adventure game, and while I like that to have a good narrative, maybe it doesn't need one. The actual gameplay _should_ be pretty cool, you have puzzles where you hack cameras and drones and other devices to distract people so you can yoink info out of computers and stuff like that, you can interrogate people and call out their lies with clues you collected, all sorts of puzzles like that, that's definitely a great concept. Except… nothing is logical. You're presented with video evidence where you have to select a combination of 3 sets of 3 options for what the correct zoomed in video looks like, for example, and this would be interesting if you had to carefully look back at what clues you've been offered. But when it's "which of the 3 does this person look like" and the only relevant info you've been given so far is something about an "old black m…

The first character we interact with gives us an unsolicited, unskippable lecture on gender dynamics, then the game goes on to introduce every character as "Cis Male" even though there are no transsexuals in the story, making this a meaningless differentiator thats only there for woke points. This is the kind of game where the developer cares more about attracting Blackrock funding than making an enjoyable game, and while you have to give them points for ambition for skipping right past the publisher phase and just going right to woke garbage, it doesn't make the game itself more fun to play.

"Song of Farca: Prologue" is is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Song of Farca". Song of Farca is a stupidly overpriced pixelcrap "more book than game" Choose Your Own Adventure with a sci-fi hacker detective theme that pretty much flopped hard on Steam. It's from Alawar, who are really more famous for shoveling crapware like RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam as desperate cash grabs. Like charging $20 for pixelcrap is a desperate cash grab. And so is abusing the "free" section of Steam with advertising. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Song of Farca, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies here with "Song of Farca: Prologue" too. A good intro to Song of Farca. It's not as polished as the actual game but definitely features some of the key game mechanics of the game. I definitely recommend trying this Prologue for free before buying the whole game.
