About Soul Astray: Outjump the Rapture

Introduction:

Soul Astray is a contemplative retro-style platformer that intentionally uproots one of the genre's key assumptions: input consistency! Refresh your expectations as you master the unique challenges introduced by the "Control Switch" mechanic (explained below) in a world filled with groovy music.

Key Game Mechanic:

Control Switch Mechanic
  • "Dash" and "Jump" inputs switch with each jump!
  • Your character's color provides a visual cue for the input orientation.

Other Features:

  • Foresight: Use the game's Foresight mechanic to plan your route to achieve the unlikely first-try success.
  • Difficulty: A minimal tutorial followed by learn-as-you-fail levels that demand creativity.
  • Health Tokens: You're an immortal soul that can survive without health, but the tokens might be useful elsewhere...
  • Redemption Tokens: If you find yourself stuck due to an earlier misstep, use these limited tokens to restart the level.
  • Goodness Meter: The purity of your soul is tracked, show them (who?) that you have more than just a good heart.
  • Lamps: Sacrifice soul fragments to light the lamps in your path, a gift to help guide other lost souls. If you find a lamp already lit, accept the gift for a unique power.
  • Trinkets: Collect trinkets in hard-to-reach places to remind yourself who you are + alter game outcomes.
  • Secrets: Unexpected secrets encourage you to make choices that can alter your end-goal.

Story:

A gently implied story of struggling to find direction. Your hesitancy to commit to a path in life has left you abandoned. Work through your indecision as you constantly transition between good and evil to find yourself! You watch them ascend around you... Can you keep up?

Such a cute game! The core switch mechanic keeps things interesting. Still getting used to the mechanics but it makes me want to master it. It feels rewarding to pass each stage. Bringing back some childhood nostalgia as a sidescroller. Art style is cute and music is catchy. Highly recommend! :)

Having a lot of fun with this game. If you like precision platformers, definitely worth checking out. The controls are tight, have to be intentional with each jump and dash in a lot of levels. Really like the switch mechanic that flips the movement keys each switch. Took a bit of time to get used to, mistakes are punishing but makes getting it right feel great. The movement's something you can really master, should be great for people that want to speedrun. The pixel art style's really cute, like the vibe of the game. Level design is nice, some really make you think how to get through.
