Space Station: Beyond takes the familiar idea of life aboard a futuristic orbital facility and turns it into a sprawling multiplayer sandbox where routine work can unravel into complete chaos. Developed by DEATHB4DEFEAT and published by Pspritechologist, the game places players aboard a Nanotrasen space station populated by people with different professions, responsibilities, personalities, and sometimes hidden motives. Instead of relying on a conventional story campaign, it allows each session to generate its own narrative through player decisions, accidents, cooperation, sabotage, and the complicated systems keeping the station operational. Much of the experience revolves around choosing a profession and actually performing the duties associated with it. Engineers maintain essential infrastructure and deal with technical problems, scientists investigate strange phenomena and experiment with potentially useful discoveries, and medical personnel attempt to keep injured or sick crew members alive. Space Station: Beyond is easily the most ambitious game in this group, and I was surprised by how much freedom it gives me. I step onto a space station where practically anything can go wrong, and I can take on different jobs, explore the station or get involved in whatever disaster is unfolding. I really like that it feels more like a living simulation than a game constantly pushing me toward one objective. The role based gameplay is the biggest strength. I can work in areas such as hydroponics and the kitchen, spend time socializing or get pulled into much more dangerous situations. The station is designed around interaction between different roles, so what one person does can affect everyone else. I enjoyed that unpredictability because I never feel completely sure what kind of situation I am going to end up in. The sandbox nature also gives me plenty of freedom. I can focus on earning money and doing my assigned work, explore recreational areas or become involved in emergencies and attacks.
