SSS222: HyperSpace

SSS222: HyperSpace is a badly made 2D retro pixel vertical scrolling arcade bullet hell/shoot 'em up. There's a few bells and whistles like Discord integration which video games need about as much as pancreatic cancer. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. Problematically, the play area is only a 9:16 aspect ratio box in the middle of the screen... while some UI elements are displayed outside this, it's apparent the developers here aren't familiar with video games and probably never played one…

Giving the game a fair shot. So far, so good, actually. The graphics are pixels, which is a stylistic choice I like, simplistic enough that controller functionality isn't necessary, yet the power ups, unlockable customization options, and different mode options offer enough variety that the game doesn't get too repetitive, and can even offer a challenge. I'd probably sink a lot more time into this game if I still had a potato for a PC. I feel the movement can be a little sluggish at times, making quick sharp movements can be difficult, so I wouldn't call it flawless, but I would call it worth playing if you don't have the highest end PC and want a fun little time waster.

The sidebars look almost identical to the play area. They are even both animated. Just no.
