The flight mechanics are still great with power management, shields and dogfighting, it all feels as good as the earlier games. On top of that, you get to fly for both the Rebels and the Empire. But the game leans hard into multiplayer, and it shows. The singleplayer missions are there, but they often feel like they were built with actual human teammates in mind. Without going through the hoops to find people to play with (it's from 1997, so no match making) you’ll be stuck with AI pilots that don’t pull their weight, which can make missions feel more frustrating than fun to downright impossible. On top of that, there’s barely any real story holding things together, especially compared to TIE Fighter, so it ends up feeling a bit empty if you’re playing solo. LGR said it perfectly. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter is like the Quake 3 of the X-Wing series of games. One that is designed for multiplayer and doesn't really have much to offer for singleplayer even with the Balance of Power campaign. Even getting it to run properly is an issue. While earlier entries in the series focused heavily on cinematic single-player storytelling, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter originally shifted attention toward multiplayer combat, finally allowing players to engage directly in Rebel-versus-Imperial battles against human opponents. The later addition of the Balance of Power campaigns completed the package by restoring the narrative-driven mission structure fans loved from previous games. The result is a deep and immersive simulator that still captures the excitement of Star Wars space combat remarkably well despite its age. The game immediately succeeds because of how effectively it recreates the feeling of piloting starfighters during the Galactic Civil War. Players enter detailed cockpits, receive military briefings, communicate with squadmates through radio chatter, and participate in large fleet engagements involving iconic ships from both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire.
