Subcube

If you like cube puzzles and a relaxing atmosphere then this game is for you.

Played on Steam Deck. My spatial puzzle solving is apparently not up to the task because after getting gold, which I think is minimum moves, on the first page of puzzles I just could not solve any more. There are so many possibilities for combinations of moving each of the 4 or 5 pieces that with no fixed points it becomes overwhelming to even tell if you're on the right track or not. Some sort of hint system would be nice, on a one minute cooldown perhaps highlighting the piece that should be moved next, or showing an outline of where that piece should end up, just anything to be able to get the puzzle started. I may just be bad at this but I really wanted to like it.

Subcube unveils all of its tricks right away so you will either fall in love with it or move on after a few attempts. The objective is straightforward: roll and combine shapes on the floor to create a cube or a rectangle. While a gamepad can be used to play the game, I found that using a mouse and keyboard was far more convenient. It is faster to select the desired shape with a mouse rather than toggling between all of them by hitting a gamepad button. The playing field can be rotated as well. A minor nitpicking here is that one side contains extra detail, such as a wall or a tree, which might obscures the shapes. The two extra options are infinite undo, which comes in handy if you make an extra move by accident, and a reset button, which is useful if you lose track of all the pieces so badly that it's easier to start over. Playing too many stages in a row might tire you out, just like in any other puzzle game. You may think to yourself "This isn't that tough" after completing the first few puzzles. However, the game quickly adds new shapes that require a lot of maneuvering around the field to fit together. The fact that you have to roll the shapes into place makes it even more…

A well made puzzle game that feels a bit like the lovechild of Tetris and Edge (or Edge Extended) The music and sound effects are very ethereal and relaxing, which is a good thing as it helps offset some of the puzzle induced frustration. Graphically, it has just enough polish to run well on lower end systems but still looks nice. As the game progresses, I found the target number of moves to be extremely challenging mostly because you don't know where the target shape would have originally been located on the playfield, nor the exact combination of the layout of the pieces in their final configuration. Most of the time I was just blindly moving pieces around hoping for the best until I got close to completion of the shape. The game is probably more suited to the mind of my 10 year old who is quite good at Rubik's Cube. I'd probably like to see a hint system that at least shows an outline of where the final position of the cube is to be located in order to achieve the minimum moves. That probably defeats the purpose of the game a bit, but the move targets seem a bit frustrating without it and perhaps more suited to people who can process many moves in their head in advance.
