"Terra Feminarum" is described by the developer as a "Finnish mythology-themed Japanese-style danmaku shoot 'em up", ("danmaku" just means "bullet hell"), where dodging waves of bullets is as important as shooting, fine, that's the genre (an old, dead and obsolete genre, I'll add). The key problem here is that the game tries so hard to be more style than substance, and fails at both, hard. The bullet hellscape is too noisy to be reasonably playable and doesn't fit too well with the genre, and the theme comes across as well as toothpaste flavoured Oreos. It just doesn't work. What do you do in the game? It's a very mediocre, overly noisy shmup, that's it. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. This game is an absolute hidden treasure and the fact it only has 60 reviews at the time of writing this after being out for 6 years is insane. It does so many thing well and the devs show a true understanding of the genre. Typically when I see a wide aspect ratio in a vertical shmup, my euroshmup detector alarms go off, but this game makes it work and they use that space beautifully in a way I didn't think was possible. The bullet patterns are super creative and just keep getting better, and the game is constantly throwing new patterns and ideas at you. It's rarely just the "big cluster of random bullets" or "just tap dodge the stream". The soundtrack is also god-tier. Sounds a lot, and I mean a *lot* like Mithotyn, which is one hell of an endorsement. It's a constant stream of epic folk black metal and it's hard to describe in words the sheer joy one feels weaving through dense danmaku to blast beats. This isn't a must-play just for Touhou-style fans, this is a must play for *all* shmup fans. It'd easily be worth $20, and the fact that it's free is just incredible. All stg fans need to check this out, and at a price of free, there's no reason not to. Play this.

Несмотря на некоторые шероховатости в балансе и повторяющиеся задачи, "Terra Feminarum" - это интересная и запоминающаяся игра с глубоким смыслом. Она заставляет задуматься о будущем человечества, гендерных ролях и цене выживания. Рекомендую всем любителям стратегий и постапокалиптических сеттингов.
