More of a spiritual successor to Man O' War: Corsair than Pirates! or AC Black Flag &c I reckon. Needs work in terms of content, but it's a solid age of sail sandbox that's proved worth the sale price after 6 hours imho. I love me some Aubrey–Maturin action, books or film, and when you get out on the ocean in this, it does the Master and Commander vibe better than many of its competitors. I particularly like the slower, more methodical combat, even if the AI can be a bit patchy. While they can bug out occasionally, the wind and weather effects are very decent. The sails flutter nicely when fully raised and behaving consistent with the wind (which they don't always unfortunately), and the ships rock convincingly in the waves during storms. However, being able to reef the sails as in Pirates!, and perhaps having the ships heel in the wind, would add to immersion. Not gonna be for every wannabe pirate, but if you're among the weirdos like me who's fond of MOW: Corsair you can do worse than give this a go. Sea monsters are terrible at present, but hopefully just placeholders.5 found this helpful
So after playing for around 11 hours i find the game to be a fun single player pirate sim between the shear size of playable area (The Hole World) and the amount diffrent ship classes and sizes makes up for some of the shot comings of the game with is primarly the boarding combat feels slow and clunky but other then that i love the game3 found this helpful

I was very positively impressed, love the direction and he gameplay. I will update this review as I play
Great concept, very poor execution. The devs clearly never tested or played their own game with player appeal in mind. It is always dark in this game, depriving players of (during the rare times the weather is clear during daylight) a great view and the pleasure to see what you are actually sailing into or shooting at. It's always either night time (pitch black screen) or very poor weather daytime (again PITCH BLACK screen). How are you supposed to enjoy any kind of game if you can't see anything?! What this game needs is an "always daytime" setting just to play it. Or some kind of daytime mod. Honestly what kind of imbecile in the dev team thought perpetual darkness to the point of tar sight is a good idea?! I have to speed up time before each fight just to see my targets during a crappy short lived daytime. So most of the time you're just waiting for the sun to come up or for the weather to clear up. Big time waster of an otherwise great potential game. What a waste of a game that could truly be an adventure.
