The Brew Barons

The Brew Barons is a solid game with some rough edges. The flying is genuinely fun and that's the piece that had to be done right, so it helps one look past some of the janky bits. It's arcade-y but does have a degree of proper physics to contend with. It strikes the right balance of not feeling like a space ship, without going into full, onerous simulation. Drag, mass, momentum, and stalling are all things and your guns are not hitscan, nor do they have unlimited ammo. It does take a little practice to get the feel for everything but once you do, there's enough there to be engaged and find satisfaction, without crossing into stressful territory. It's good the flying has a strong foundation, because this game is all about near-collisions. Your weapons and boost are water-based and you refill the tank by flying low over water. You shoot fruit from trees, bomb plants free from the ground / seabed, and even cut wheat with your propeller. The resources you extract pop only a short distance from where you liberated them, so you'll need to fly close to the ground, water, trees, etc., and then dodge a hill or building on the other side. This game is really great. It is a brewing sim/RPG/arcade style flight air combat game. There really is nothing else like it.

Great little indie title. Rough around the edges, but crafted with lots of love. The start of the game is a bit slow, I am not a fan how lots of the sandboxy/experimental mechanics are pretty much locked behind the end game (I am talking mostly about plane parts being a bit pricy). The plane customization is the best part of the game, the description of the upgrade almost never matches with the real utility of it and that's a good thing. You can only realize the potential of the upgrade after actually buying and playing with it. Some upgrades that are seemingly bad on paper are absolute S-tier, while the "good" ones are trash... Also, the plane changes visual style based on an upgrade and all of them are super cool and unique. Bugs are a big issue, the game loves to just break on you, like phase you through enemy planes or disable your flight controls... AI voices is NOT an ISSUE, there are like 10 characters in the game that all have unique dialogue based on who you pair with who, it's impossible to expect a small indie studio to record so many voice lines... the delivery is flat because it's AI, but it works. If you love either Crimson Skies or Tailspin you will love this game. Its become my nieces first flight game, as I got her a copy to. Its relaxing and challenging at the same time!

Game does not support non-English keyboard

As much as I loved the game, there are a few sore points about it that prevents me from giving this visually beautiful game a thumbs up. 1. I don't approve of the use of AI to do voice lines for characters. Asides from ethical reason, I think it takes away from the impact characters have on the story. I think if its within the budget the developers should replace it with actual voice actors. 2. Two minigames are kind of annoying. The first one being the taxi boat minigame, its difficult to maneuver in a obnoxious way. I think the difficult controls were partly intentional, but after completing the relevant pilot mission i didn't ever want to replay it with how frustrating it was to just turn, only to go way too far. The second was the deep-sea winch minigame, it was impossible to tell how close or far the sharks and jellyfish were relative to the line, making it really frustrating when i lose the crate because I couldn't judge how close the jellyfish was. 3. Why can't I play the boardgame minigame from my own bar? Why do I have to go to another bar just to play it?
