About The Cost Of Bliss

✦ AI summary

Survive nightly hide-and-seek encounters with a relentless Entity while completing mysterious tasks in a psych ward, all while managing your dwindling matches and battling withdrawal. The game's chilling narrative blurs the line between recovery and corruption as you descend deeper into an unsettling relationship with the only person offering you relief.

A highly stressful psychological horror game about addiction.

GAMEPLAY:

SURVIVE:
When the "Entity" closes in, the game transitions into a high-stakes chase sequence, demanding quick thinking and nerves of steel. Get in one of the rooms, shut the door behind, hide under anything you can find and pray the "Entity" doesn't find you.

BE STEALTHY:
Silence is your ally. Move cautiously, avoiding puddles and other potential sources of noise. The entity is drawn to disturbances, so stealth is your best chance at remaining unseen. Hug the shadows and tread lightly.

PREPARE:
The key to survival lies in your ability to study your surroundings meticulously. Keep an eye out for traps and identify hiding places where you can seek refuge. Each room holds secrets, and careful observation will be your greatest ally.

MANAGE:
Matches serve as your lifeline in the suffocating darkness. Explore the ward to collect matches scattered across various locations. Manage your resources wisely, as matches are limited, and the flickering flame will burn faster if you run.

TASKS:
Each night, a mysterious man will give you a task to complete. Each task unravels a piece of the sinister history haunting the ward and brings you one step closer to your Bliss. Get what you're asked for and return them quickly before getting caught.

STORY

Force to spend a month in a psych ward to cure your addiction, you fight yourself going through painful levels of withdrawal. To cope, you make friends with a man who helps ease your pain, in exchange for unsettling favours. With every passing night, the boundaries between salvation and damnation get blurier.

I would describe The Cost Of Bliss as a solid horror experience. Clear intuitive objectives that fit nicely within the narrative and theme of situation the protagonist finds themselves in. I really enjoyed the short, grotesque and yet uniquely stylised animated cut scenes, they were a really nice touch. Especially as they were used sparingly, increasing their impact. Gameplay overall is simple, navigate to here, collect this, navigate back but with the additional of managing matches, trying to remember the hallway layout, keeping noise to a minimum and avoiding the entity was juggling act that really kept me engaged. Personally I would have preferred the game to be in actual 4:3 rather then a perfectly square view port but really the difference there is pretty insignificant and didn't effect my enjoyment of the game. A setting to change mouse speed/acceleration would have also been nice but once again this didn't cause an issue.

I don't like the game enough to finish it, but it's not bad by any means. It's just that it's a fetch quest game. Get an item for the guy while avoiding the monster, bring it to him, rinse and repeat. If you don't mind that kind of gameplay you will like it.

I honestly loved the game the moment I got done watching CJU play, and love it even more after playing. I wont spoil the themes and messaging, but the vibe is isolation, depression, with some Cosmic horror elements... leaving you with more questions about the unknown, than it answers. It works well, I just wish there was more. It is a simple game, but it is effective at making you feel something very dark. So excited to see more from the Dev, and hopefully a more fleshed out version of the game, or possibly a sequel that adds more to the story/universe. The NPC that gives you tasks has so much potential for Icon status, he is unknowable and devious, while delivering a lesson in the Cost Of Bliss. I felt his presence was otherworldly, and could become iconic given more chances to leave an impression.... just phenomenal. Worth the price, as it is the cost of bliss.
