These games begin without any introduction, storyline, or even brief context about the world you find yourself in. They are simply a collection of puzzles spread across fifty rooms. Since this is already the fourth entry in the series, new players might feel overwhelmed at the start. It’s generally wiser to begin with the first installment, as it provides a more natural progression in both mechanics and puzzle difficulty. The main gameplay mechanic revolves around deciphering the correct letters on a Cryptex by using clues written in a book. Although the table features a few other objects, the only one you can actually interact with is the Cryptex itself. More specifically, you rotate the lettered rings to find the combination that corresponds to the puzzle described in the book. When you discover the correct letters, nothing visibly “clicks” into place, and the solutions are always random strings of letters or numbers so there’s no way to guess or cheat. Once you believe you’ve identified the right sequence, you must align the letters with the Cryptex’s center. If the combination is correct, the puzzle is solved, and you advance to the next room.
