The Last Train - Definitive Edition

Pros: -You get to be more familiar with the locations of the U.S. states as a foreigner. Cons: -The game feels like a prototype, it's very repetitive and the content just feels incomplete and poorly designed, it's totally not worth the 'Definitive Edition' title.

[b] Short Review [/b] The Last Train is a resource management simulation survival game in which you play as the conductor of a train. The game takes place in an alternate reality in which Japan unleashed a vicious attack on America post World War II. -------- [b] Graphics: 6 / 10 [/b] The grim dark tones and colours of the game really set the mood. Especially in contrast to the opening scene (before the apocalyptic events occur). The graphics and style of the game work well with the theme provided and even the portraits of the characters seem to fit in with the style. There are a lack of animations and overall polish to the art, though it may or may not play into the favour of the theme as art is always subjective. Just picked the game up on sale since it had a really interesting setting. The game is good, has a very fascinating world war 2 story. Loved the strategic aspect of the gameplay, there is a lot of resource management and planning involved. I managed to 100% the game with all achievements in about 4 hours. I would love to see more content in the setting.

The Last Train - Definitive Edition is a broken mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The game is a point and click strategy/adventure/tycoon game, best to be described as an arguably deficient ripoff of The Oregon Trail, only set in a completely unrealistic alternative WW2 scenario where the trains are all from 1870, because the developer knows nothing about trains or WW2. Or making games that work. The game was never tested on recent builds of Windows 10/11, and upon launching, the UI is unresponsive. You can move your mouse around all you want and click, but nothing works. Presumably the game is waiting for iPhone touchscreen input that will never happen, because the game is ported to PC. Regardless, the developers failure to test the game, or resolve issues when notified is bad enough... continuing to sell it is unethical. This makes deeper technical assessment difficult, but some things are directly obvious. Pros: Get more familiar with the United States, has a little charm at first, and a little strategy to what items you should collect/build first Cons: repetitive very quickly, the challenge of building/collecting items is too easy the more you play, and the story is way too short. The features and previews looked great but the lack of reviews made me hesitate. I picked it up for under $5 during the Steam Summer 2022 sale. The graphics on the game are perfectly fine for this type of game. I enjoy that it lets you also choose different train presets. First thing I did was try the story mode. The story mode is really just the sandbox mode, but every now and then you are stopped to be told about your "story" by the female narrator. The narrator was very loud and obnoxious, there was no option to turn it off. The story was straightforward and dull. It took me maybe two or three hours to finish it. There's no set goals to reach in the story mode. At some point the amount of passengers or length of time in the game will just trigger the next cut scene.
