The Silence

I have strongly mixed feelings about The Silence. It's hard for me to place it, but I will share my thoughts. First of all, the map is designed really well in many ways. I found that it forces you to be creative, it's not easy to remember any paths, yet there's many recognizable places as you become more familiar with the map. The map does not reward you for plowing through it, which is also really good. You're better off by staying aware and keeping track of your position. Now, as for optimization of the game, I am greatly disappointed. The game is very demanding for it's short size and relatively simple graphic options. When I actually reached a playable state where frames didn't bother me, I was at a point of almost 3x pixels downscaled, that's not a good sign. For context, I'm on one of the most high-end PC's on the market. The lighting in The Silence does fine for the most part, though it has some interesting flashlight behavior. I noticed that the flashlight grows into a game mechanic that can be sort of "controlled", once you get a good feel for it. The level design and atmosphere were good! The controls worked good as well. But, the AI of the monster was very... absent? I spent almost an hour running around looking for bears and only encountered the monster once. Also the FOV with the jerky flashlight made me feel motion sick, but that might just be a me thing..

I played this game in it's BETA form, and when I tell you EVERYTHING changed! It become so much more realistic, it has nice sound effects, custom monster and it isn't a game you will regret. I love it and I am looking forward to more games!

I enjoyed the feel of "The Silence," but it needs considerable refinement to become a complete game, and even then, it would still be quite short. The most disappointing aspect was the monster. I regret not having my recording software running, but I did see a brief clip of it sliding down a hallway at high speed. I'm not sure if it has animation, and there seems to be no means of avoidance other than blind luck. There are no mechanics for running away, hiding, or distracting the monster. It might not even have AI; it could be following a predetermined path through the maze, and if it encounters you, it's game over. Finding the teddy bears was also frustrating. Although that's the premise of the game, I felt more at ease when I thought the game was guiding me toward each bear. Realizing that I could spend a long time searching for a bear hidden in some corner of the map was disheartening. At one point I restarted the game because I thought a glitch had halted my progress, but I was really just lost and confused, which highlights how poorly the game communicates its goals and progress.
