About THE TEAR

THE TEAR is an immersive VR adventure.

Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakes.

Is it YOU?
To find the secret gate to the Otherworld?
Leave reality behind and enter a fantastic dream, a strange fairytale... find yourself in THE TEAR.

What will you decide?
There is never just one path through this VR adventure. The whole world is one big circular puzzle and your beginning might be the end. Save this magic world by reacting to your environment. Will you gain the trust of a fairy so it would land on your hand? Will the sphinxes be merciful to you?

... Go out and marvel at this world of wonders with the eyes of a child. And after a wondrous journey, fantastical creatures might grant you admittance to another dimension only a pure heart might be able to withstand”.

Are YOU the one to save both, the magic world and the world outside your HMD?

Gameplay-time for one play-throughs is between 30 minutes and one hour.

Available for Arcades on SpringboardVR

I honestly have no idea what I experienced here. Mostly I was just stood inside a sphere. Sometimes I was just standing still. Sometimes there were things which could be smushed together. Sometimes I was in a different location. Sometimes the things were squid. I couldn't really figure out any rhyme or reason to the interactions or why I was doing them and I was completely bewildered when it ended. What is this for? Who is it for? If this was meant to be a game then it needed to be significantly less muddled. If it was meant to be an art installation then it should have lost some of the game-like trappings and focused on the art. If this was just a weird little tech demo then charging money for it as if it was a finished experience seems dishonest. Either way, for "An immersive VR adventure in a fantastic world." it's not particularly immersive, there is no adventure and it's very particularly fantastical.

This is a VR only art installation masquerading as a video game. Explore an esoteric, surreal world with low poly VR "Fairies" and things to express, well, nobody has any idea what the art school dropout Starbucks baristas were doing on their work breaks here. Let's go over the basic rules for Steam. Steam is for video games. Video games can feature art, but art without gameplay is not a video game. Since this is absolutely without any gameplay merits (and, franky, no real artistic merit either), it doesn't belong on Steam. Even if it was spectacularly amazing art, which it isn't, it still wouldn't belong. Let's talk about VR exclusivity. Slapping VR only on your "game" doesn't suddenly make your "game" good. If your "game" has no appeal to gamers without VR, then your game has no appeal to gamers at all. It could be argued this "game" is so bad it makes VR itself worse, even if you don't own it. Laughed out of art school? Local art gallery took out a restraining order? Why not dump your "art" on Steam and pretend it's a video game? Maybe that's unkind, but there are examples where artistic expression has been central to a video game and yet that video game h…

Decent VR Game experience. You fly through numerous lands, have an adventure, and it is a blast. 8/10
