The Test: Final Revelation

This review is going to be quite long but when a game asks questions like "would you rather press a button and kill your favourite pet or your favourite family member", I think I'm allowed to ramble a tad. I wanted to like this game. Admittedly I went in having not played the other games, but I approached it with curiosity and no prior knowledge of the games at all. I shouldn't have expected much. At the end, I got maybe 6 lines of "lesson" based on the word it gave me: compassion. It told me to think before I speak so I didn't hurt people and to put myself in other people's shoes to understand them. I'll spare you, but I am very good at putting myself in other people's shoes and thinking before I speak (most of the time). It felt like the game got this entirely wrong and gave me shockingly little in very broad strokes. And with the questions it asked, I can understand why. There was no nuance to anything. For example: it asked me if I had ever purposefully hurt an animal. I have so I pressed yes. What I couldn't say was that I had killed an animal that was hurt and dying slowly and painfully. But the game simply looked at that and went "ok she's a psychopath that pulls wing…

My word was "Trusting" which is accurate. However, whoever came up with the would you rather questions is seriously f'd up lmao XD

I was torn for this review, but ended up leaning negative. Here are my pros and cons: CONS -First and foremost, the use of ai images was disheartening. It was in 2020 when the environmental and social impacts of it weren't fully apparent, however, given that the developers have released another game with even more ai artwork, I can't excuse it. -The writing could use some work. It was definitely low effort or cringe-heavy at times, especially in the rhyming portions. I would definitely have loved it as an edgy kid, but as an adult that grew up with this series it definitely takes away from any immersion. I have my suspicions that those lines were also ai generated. -Definitely a lesser gripe, but some sections (mostly the image section) had been drawn on too long and felt repetitive. PROS -I would definitely say the questions inspired a lot of introspection. In my case I thought about a lot of deeper things, like being lucky to have such a great support system, calling more attention to some of my lapses in moral judgement, or realizing I'm a more caring person than I give myself credit for.
