Unforgettable You

It is not easy to write a negative review for a free game, especially one I truly wanted to enjoy. However, the experience left me disappointed. When looking at the story with a clear and objective mind, it becomes obvious that it portrays an unhealthy and toxic relationship. This kind of dynamic is difficult to relate to and does not allow for any meaningful emotional connection. The visual presentation was pleasant, and the format had potential. Unfortunately, the story felt extremely awkward and uncomfortable. It leaned heavily on outdated stereotypes about relationships. In the present day, we understand what healthy relationships look like. I do not appreciate when any form of art tries to normalize toxicity and present it as love. That is simply not the case. We should be encouraging people to remain true to themselves, even when they are in relationships. Because of these issues, I can only give the game one star. If the goal is to move people through storytelling in games or art, the emotions presented must be honest and authentic. Disguising pain or dysfunction as romance only creates confusion and misguides the audience.

"Unforgettable You" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a garbage "more art than game" platformer with an art style unabashedly ripped off from Microsoft's "Limbo" and a backdrop story that hamfistedly approaches social issues. It's from Nannings, who are notorious asset flippers/plagiarists who try to charge cash money on Steam for free browser games (in case you're one of those gamers who doesn't like to support toxic, unethical developers). Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. Trying to address serious issues such as mental and emotional health through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. Its a short platformer with very light puzzle elements. Its pretty meh, but has a decent romantic story intertwined.
