Unhack is a mix of visual novel and light puzzling. Short and sweet at a little over an hour with infinite lives at normal difficulty. It started negatively for me with the usual "pervert" main character, but I ended up liking the story by the end. Amateurish fan art but not terrible. The "unhacking" mini-game with extremely simplistic graphics was more varied and interesting than I initially thought. It did require a bit of reflexes by moments so it wasn't pure cerebral puzzling. Unhack was passable, but I wondered if it deserved a recommendation. It came down to if I liked this enough that I would want to play the extra levels (Destruction DLC) and the sequel. I realized I would not.12 found this helpful
Everything feels extremely cheap, uninteresting, cringey, unnerving or a combination of two or more of those. It has some little charm, but it's not enough to make it a positive experience :/3 found this helpful
There's merit in the worst of it. i damn near lost my mind doing the mazes. Why would you tie the dialogue, you know, where you're telling the story. to specific moves? You destroy the rhythm of precision. Because it's not about step by step it's about solving the problem and if you can see the timing, the level is a river to sweep through, not puddle stomp. The solve was of course to have the ability to see past dialogue. Not grant infinite lives because if you happened to miss a key point, you're still left to piece it together. Which was fine enough for a story like this. Sweet, cute, but simple and predictable. BUT IT'S ABOUT THE PRINCIPLE NOT HOW WELL IT WAS EXECUTED. That aside, the concepts for the maze were very solid. If you want hard, they aren't but they are thoughtful aside from the dialogue ♥♥♥♥ up. I also could be talking out of my ass right now because I immediately stopped playing the standard mode at the first sign of said dialogue ♥♥♥♥ up. XD Also you can beat it in an hour. The 2 hours total is card mining. Honestly, I am gonna give this game a thumb's up because it's better than just scrolling on your phone, which I have done for an hour, or 2. Or 10.…2 found this helpful
Unhack, developed and published by InvertMouse, is a creative fusion of visual novel storytelling and light puzzle gameplay that blends science fiction themes with a distinctive anime-inspired style. The game places players in the role of an “Unhacker,” a digital security expert tasked with combating a destructive virus known as the 5K Worm. Set in a futuristic cyberspace where artificial intelligence and human ingenuity coexist, Unhack tells a story that explores the ethics of technology, corporate greed, and the human relationship with digital consciousness. At its heart, it’s a compact but thoughtful experience that aims to deliver both emotional storytelling and gameplay engagement within a short runtime. From the first moments, Unhack establishes an energetic rhythm that sets it apart from typical visual novels. It intersperses dialogue-driven scenes with interactive puzzle segments that simulate the process of “unhacking” a corrupted system. These puzzles take the form of grid-based mazes, where players must guide a digital avatar through pathways filled with hazards, timing movements to avoid viruses, lasers, or other obstacles. The mechanics are simple and intuitive, relyi…2 found this helpful
I actually thought the puzzles weren't too bad. Can't say I was the biggest fan of the visual novel aspects, but i don't regret playing it.
A short game with basic but decent voiceover for the AI. Of course, there's no voice over for the protagonist and I am not complaining either. You can probably sense the story from the get-go, so don't expect any surprises if you're a veteran player. Ideally, I'd recommend this game for kids as it's safe (in all ways). The gameplay is smooth and there's a challenge mode as well. An added time limit would have been a nice touch.
