VoltAge:Genesis

One of my roommates played this game in its beta version and I bought it based on her description. I'm a HUGE classic Final Fantasy nerd. I loved 4, 5 & 6, and this game very much scratched that itch. I was hooked by setting of a post-apocalyptic future. I love all the extra characters, the music is unique for each area, the story is unique and very much subverting my expectations of a standard fantasy game. Getting it on sale for $5 was great, too. There was a small bump when I thought I lost my progress after a recent patch update, but soon after reporting the issue, the devs very quickly posted on the discussion page on how to copy over save files from previous versions of the game. There's a LOT of love showing in this project and I am delighted to return to Nolan and Bridget's story.

Recommended If you're a fan of old-school RPGs, then I highly recommend VoltAge: Genesis. This game captures the feel of classic RPGs while adding plenty of depth to keep you hooked for hours. You can spend countless hours exploring the world and uncovering hidden secrets, or simply follow the rich main story. If you're someone who enjoys diving into lore, there's plenty to discover, and you'll recruit a variety of party members throughout your adventure. One of my favorite parts of the game is the combat system. It gives you the freedom to build your character in different ways, whether you want to be a heavily armored tank, a powerful magic user, or something in between. Personally, I enjoyed mixing melee combat with magic, which made battles feel both fun and strategic. Out of all the characters, Gregory stood out the most to me. Without spoiling anything, I really enjoyed the layers of mystery surrounding him. He was one of those characters that kept me wanting to learn more every time he appeared. For an indie RPG Maker game, Voltage Genesis features a unique progression system (quests become available as you level up, giving you a good reason to regularly chat with characters) and a varied cast of characters. Additionally, nearly all characters can equip multiple weapon types allowing you a wide variety of team builds, plus you take your full team with you at all times so can easily switch out your crew for the current situation. The only real drawbracks are the limited enemy variety and something limited element usage (practically nothing is weak to wind, but earth weaknesses abound). That side, I highly recommend to anyone longing for the old days of 16 bit RPGS that force you to tease out their secrets and locations.

It was a fun game with lots of secrets to explore. Don't use the optimize feature for anything other than armor though since optimize prioritizes defense. Also direly needs a map.
