The Ultimate Ecosystem Sim Game

From the back-catalog of Pocketwatch Games, 2005's Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa was the game that started this indie's journey.

Expect the unexpected out of this unique Tycoon game -- There are no people to please, there is no money to horde, there are only animals. Packs of hungry lions, families of chattering baboons, and epic herds of wildebeests fill the ecosystems that players create and control.

Features

  • "Be the Animal" lets you take control over any creature
  • Earn jewels for building balanced ecosystems -- and use those jewels to bring rain to the desert
  • Compete for trophies and hidden content in the Sandbox or follow the journey of Dr. Willoughby and Miss Carrilou in Story Mode

2 male lions can breed in the game. Inclusive and ahead of its times I would say.

A real gem, unique in gameplay and atmosphere. I love building and managing the ecosystems in this game and running through the levels watching the populations grow. This game was relatively advanced for its release date, and is still fun despite the aging. I only wish there were more games like this, where you manage ecology, grow the flora and fauna of a region like this. It feels so rewarding in this too, and with a chill story backdrop

This was a classic when I was child/teen. I am very happy it is added to steam. It may not be the best graphics, but it has full screen support and brings back nostalgia.

Plays well, and still a good bit of strategic fun after all these years.

I loved this game as a kid and would play it for hours on end. I have spent the last few months scratching my head over what this game was called - all I could remember was watering holes and flamingoes, lol. For $2 you can’t really go wrong if you’re into older style tycoon games. I love it for the nostalgia purposes and I’m happy that it runs well on my Steam Deck.

A game I loved to play as a kid, despite how bad lil me was (and is) at managing resources. Throughout the years since I occasionally get the brain worm that reminds me of it's existence and have to reinstall and play it for a bit, though unfortunately through several moves I lost the CD. On a whim I decided to search for a copy and was thrilled to see it was on Steam. Made before the era of unreasonable feature creep, the game is very simple. Simply put, you need to manage an ecosystem. Complete side objectives to earn currency to spend on adding more food or filling water holes, properly manage the ecosystem and meet the goal of a certain number of animals alive on the map to complete a level. As you progress through levels, unlock different animals with different needs. It's an old game, and it certainly looks the part. My biggest issue with the game is missing audio/music and the minimap doesn't align with player/animal location, though this is pretty minor. Overall it still plays very well.
