WILL: A Wonderful World / WILL：美好世界

There is a warning on the store page but I think this game goes beyond content warning territory into problematic territory. There are multiple instances of children being assaulted, one with a lot of unnecessary detail. There is also a positively portrayed relationship between a 30 year old teacher and high school student. I know these are real issues that shouldn’t be hidden away, but this portrayal had really bad vibes. I was super excited because i’m a fan of any game where I can toy with people’s lives and this delivered and exceeded my expectations. The stories crossed over with a really cool mechanic where edits to two stories are done from one pool of potential changes, each change can only be used in one of the stories. I can’t recommend this because it gave me the ick but this dev should definitely make another game without any children at all this time.

I've always hated vignettes. Ever since high school made me read a book with them (House on Mango Street), I've hated them ever since. And this VN, as it happens, is filled with vignettes. I was hopeful that these vignettes would be better. They are not. What's the story again? I have no idea. There's a police thriller going on, and a human trafficking gangster thriller going on, and...a teacher-student romance? Oh, and there's the plotline where a kid has an awful life and gets the bad touch from a doctor. There's that too. I dunno where the game thinks its going. I decided I was done playing when the game endings wouldn't switch properly. I should probably mention the endings of the vignettes. You see, you get a rating of how well each character did. You only advance when each character gets an S rank. But it's kinda hard to figure out what you need to do to advance. It's even harder to get every ending to a vignette. Honestly, I probably burned out myself playing this, and that's why I'm unwilling to pick this back up. So yeah. A ton of scenes got a strong emotional reaction from me, i will argue they are fairly well presented. I really dig the soundtrack: from the soothing environmental tunes that set the mood right; to the tiny cut bops that characters made when they talk, to even the subtle sound effects that make transitions felt right. Even after all of that said i found the game uninteresting, tone vain, characters wrote with quite a few surface level understanding of what trials and tribulations of different people actually made them what they are. It just... didn't make much an impression of me. Even tho i see how to others maybe did [spoiler] I guess this the closer i would ever get to "tear" some one else precious art like Mr Zhaoren but contrary to that fictional character i don't have the heart to that. I'm voting up to counteract the snowflakes voting down on the game's more shocking content. That aside, WILL is an unusual take on a visual novel, where you rearrange elements of the narrative in a different order to change the outcomes. There's quite a lot of trial and error involved, and the drama comes more from experiencing the more extreme outcomes that are possible, and the more humorous ones. That said, this game is deceptive; you might be from the visuals into thinking it's a light hearted feel-good story, but it's not. Most of the characters have deeply depressing backgrounds, and rarely are the stories ultimately positive. The entire game ends more or less on a sour note. This is a game about trying to rearrange the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up lives of damaged individuals to make them more positive and, despite having some success, still being unable to fundamentally change the nature of their realities. Go forward with forewarning.

Solid 9/10 One of the best visual novels I have played. I found this gem by chance and boyyy was I surprised. The story-telling is super immersive and I loved the interactive aspect of ability to affect the story by re-arranging sentences as a puzzle. The glossary was surprisingly helpful and I ended up learning a lot of little bits of trivia, facts about all sorts of stuff. The game made me go through so many emotions and I was on the edge of my seat with some parts of story and rooting for many of these characters for a happy ending. I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys playing visual novels or just wanting to discover this genre.
