About Wing of Darkness

Story
Wars between nations are no longer conflicts between people; rather, they have become struggles for survival as humanity fights an all-new enemy.
Unidentified flying objects referred to as Blankers have suddenly appeared, and the only weapon powerful enough to defeat them is the Held System.
Only a small number of exceptional young women are capable of operating Held Systems, and they have become known as Frauleins.
Frauleins are now humanity’s last hope… If we don’t fight, humanity is doomed.
But fighting comes with a price that some may not be prepared to pay...

About the Game
An all-new breed of aerial shooting game, Wing of Darkness is comprised of a number of key elements that set it apart from others in the same genre.
This high-speed 3D shooting game allows players to experience exhilarating battles in the sky, as well as a series of cutscenes depicting the growth of the main characters throughout the story.

Shooting
Experience the thrill of flight with user-friendly controls, in any direction. Even if you run out of ammo, it automatically restores itself over time. Choose from a wide array of high-tech weapons to combat powerful enemies without having to worry about conserving ammunition. With the addition of some futuristic elements, players can experience combat like never before.
Cutscenes
Cutscenes sandwich the combat scenes, driving the plot forward.
The two main characters (voiced by well-known Japanese voice actresses) tell their own stories in order to give the player insight into the past.
The narrative alternates between the game’s two heroines, Klara and Erika.
Players can watch the mystery of Blankers and Frauleins unfold from their perspective.

Wing of Darkness is a science-fiction aerial combat game that combines fast-paced airborne shooting with a heavily story-driven anime presentation focused on emotion, trauma, and human connection during wartime. While the game initially presents itself as a stylish action title filled with futuristic flight combat, much of the experience is actually centered around the relationship between its protagonists and the emotional consequences of an endless conflict against mysterious enemies. The result is a game that often feels closer to an interactive anime drama than a pure action shooter, creating an experience driven as much by atmosphere and character development as by combat itself. The story takes place in a world under constant attack from unidentified aerial entities known as the Blankers. Humanity’s only defense comes from advanced mechanical flight systems operated exclusively by young women called Frauleins. Players primarily follow Klara and Erika, two pilots forced into dangerous battles while struggling with fear, isolation, and the emotional burden of becoming humanity’s final line of defense. Although the overall premise resembles familiar anime war stories, the narra…

Good game-play matters more than graphics.

I guess I'll start by saying I'm a speedrunner. Now as a speedrunner I can honestly say the game is fun and as a speed run it is quite interesting and fun. Although not the best game the story is solid. The voice acting is where the game shines and gameplay is fun despite the game being short. From a speedrun perspective it's actually a game I tend to recommend if it can be gotten on sale as it's great for helping people work on getting better at movement in a 3D space. Now whether or not you think that a good or bad thing is up to you. But personally I think the game has its charms and is quite a good way to brush up on a skill set or improve when looked at in that regard.

I'd only recommend this if you want a quick Shoot 'Em Up game that doesn't really need you to think of anything. I would honestly not recommend this in any other way, but I really want these kinds of games (mech, high-speed/action combat, etc.) to boom again. There's a lack of them these days. With that out of the way...
TLDR
(too long, didn't read) - The game lacks substance in its story, it only gets a bit juicy near the end and even then the game is really short. As others have said, it can be done in 2 hours or less if you don't care for the story. The gameplay is OK but know that midway through the game, the AI makes the missions easy to clear. - You can check the VLDR section of this review if you want to know more, and at the end of it is my RECOMMENDATION for the developers if they decide to remake this game into something better than it is now (and possibly with more budget). - All in all, the game's a quick and mindless time burner that you could enjoy if you just like shooting things and blowing them up. If you want to try the game, wait for a sale. If not, then you could probably just watch a playthrough of the game on YouTube.
VLDR
(very lon…

Imagine combining Ace Combat with Armored Core. WoD is a very short but pleasant experience. Way too easy, but a nice distraction. The gameplay has some nice features that are sadly not taken full advantage of. For instance, the final battle
is not a true duel as you would hope but a test of endurance.
You are never tested in a 1-on-1 battle to see your true potential. I did enjoy many of the early missions, especially the
night mission which was more dynamic in its proceedings.
Weapons are all useful and functional, providing different options for those who want to customize their experience. Issue though comes with no backup after running out of ammo; would have liked a melee option (similar to Armored Core). Story is lacking. The happenings in missions seem far too removed from the between-mission cutscenes. The missions don't feel like they have much impact save for the last 2 missions. I am not a fan of 3D renders, but that's my subjective opinion. 2D art is much more expensive so I understand why they chose 3D. Enemy diversity is low, but tolerable. You have standard infantry, enhanced infantry (which do not feel noticeably differe…
