Yoomurjak’s Ring, developed by Private Moon Studios and published by M.INDIE, is a point-and-click adventure that blends full-motion video with panoramic exploration to create a quiet, atmospheric mystery steeped in Hungarian history and legend. It follows Jonathan Hunt, a New York journalist of Hungarian descent, who travels to the city of Eger after the death of his mother. There he stumbles upon a pair of letters from the late nineteenth century referring to a mysterious professor and an invention that may have allowed travel through time. What begins as a simple curiosity quickly turns into a deeper investigation, one that connects Jonathan to a chain of events spanning more than a century. The premise may sound like classic adventure fare, but the game’s strength lies in its commitment to realism, local authenticity, and a slow-burning narrative that feels as much like an archaeological expedition as it does a supernatural thriller. I played this game at least 15 years ago when it came out at a different gaming site and this is my 2nd time playing the Steam version. Why?? - because it simply has to be the best FMV game around! Set in Hungary with speech in Hungarian with subtitles, it's not just a walking simulator. There are many choices to make, locations to choose and puzzles to solve. A man on holiday in his mother's native Hungary gets caught up in an unexpected quest to fulfill a promise made. The scenes in this real city of Eger, Hungary is beautiful! You can actually walk many of the streets on your own soaking in the culture and look around 360 degrees at any stop. The views of the city atop tall buildings are a treat treat as well as the cutscenes shown from above showing portions of city and country. There is a map where you can quickly jump to different locations, but I enjoyed occasionally walking the streets for some time looking a shops, restaurants, people and the European architecture. The main actor as well as supporting actors all did an excellent job. It's quite the scavenger hunt travelling all over town trying to find new clues. It starts a bit slow setting up the story line…

This was a very fun game with the vibe of wandering around in GMaps Street View but with a story to follow. I liked talking to so many different characters and how genuine all the personalities felt. It had a very slice of life vibe that lent a cozy feeling to the wandering around.

Yoomurjak's Ring is one of the most unique experiences you'll have in gaming. I suppose it's somewhat in the vein of an edutainment title. It was made to promote a Hungarian town, Eger, as well a well-regarded work of literature that was written there, Stars of Eger. One of the cool aspects of the game is that an actor from a film adaptation of Stars of Eger plays the same character in this game. The game has a really neat mode of moving around which seems to have inspired Google street view. You can travel all throughout the real city by moving through a series of still pictures. It is important to know where you're going in this detective story because little is blocked off to you. The game has a good story and is quite difficult. It's made by the same designer of the Ancient Game of Nations series of adventure games, and is similar in difficulty to the last of those, Sword of Toledo--although it is as long as all of those games put together. This is better than them though, because it approximates the feeling of being a tourist in a real place. A game like this would be really cool to be made nowadays in VR.

I lived in Eger between 2009 and 2015, so this was a huge nostalgia bomb for me. The old Dobó Square, the Más Klub poster in the Lyceum, and all the little details that come from the fact that the location isn’t staged made me smile as someone who partly feels like a local. It captures the city beautifully and offers a very interesting snapshot of the “old” Eger, which—on a rather meta level—felt like time travel for me as well. I love it. 😄

Amazing point&click adventure mystery game, even after 20 years! You just have to deal with reading the subtitles for what everyone says but the genuinely great humor easily makes up for it: the turkish bath guys are hilarious! A couple minor English translation errors that incorrectly describe the crest: the (single) lion parades on the Azure (Not Argent) field while the 2 symbols of wine go on the Argent compartments instead. The talking banner waves (like a flag) not twists. There's no hint for the pedestal (except saying it by default matches the crest's colors: the correct one doesn't) but it's the ornate white and green-grey one with no brown wood.
