✦ AI summary

Cubic Odyssey offers pleasant exploration with good terrain generation and satisfying tool progression, but players consistently criticize the shallow story, repetitive grinding, and lack of depth that make it feel like an inferior version of Minecraft or No Man's Sky. The single-player experience is reportedly manageable once you understand the mid-game progression, though the multiplayer server component appears buggy and poorly implemented, making this best enjoyed solo if at all.

Too shallow to recommend, just play modded Minecraft or No Man's Sky instead. The story isn't good enough to justify slogging through the boring, grindy gameplay. It could be fun if there was a way to disable the energy drain (food system) but I'm not stopping every 5 minutes to grind resources so I can continue playing. For £20 you could get Minecraft, NMS (on sale), or Starbound - all of which are better games.

SINGLEPLAYER review: I took my time to enjoy it and got 15 hours of gameplay before it got too grindy to continue the bland, linear 'story' progression. Unfortunately the exploration is a mile wide and an inch deep. Don't get me wrong, the landscape is pretty and varied. Really great terrain generation with a distant horizon that's fun to travel across on foot, hover bike or ship. I didn't mind that the planets aren't endless, I felt that they were more than large enough to explore. The tool unlocks/upgrades come at a decent pace and are fun to use. Now that I've acknowledged the good points, I'll circle back to why I can't recommend this - the 'odyssey' isn't particularly compelling or interesting. The story isn't much of a story without interesting characters or factions. The worlds are pretty, but they don't feel "alive" when NPCs just stand around waiting for you to interact. TLDR: It's simple, dumb fun and it looks pretty. But the story is weak, there's no adventure here, just lots of mining.

Was a fun game, combo of NMS and Minecraft as all note. I hit a serious wall midgame, but then once I understood you can quickly raid and leave higher level systems for better ships or weapons, the rest of the game became much more manageable.
Solo 9/10. Dedicated server 0/10
Bought this one back when things weren't fully implemented and it was fun then too. The game went on sale not long ago, and I talked a friend into it so we could play together on a server. The server portion of this game is terrible. Too many bugs to list. At the date of this review, this is a fun game alone.
