Lucky's Tale

One of those games I kinda wish steam allowed for a middle ground between yes and no. Just a "meh". But I'm leaning more no with this one. It's just an incredibly generic platformer with the singular gimmick of a VR camera. That's all it does with the VR and that's disappointing. Could of had the player able to interact with things in the game world like move sliding platforms or pull out-of-reach levers, stun enemies, block projectiles, anything... Mario galaxy managed to pull off this concept of the player being able to interact with the game world independent of the character nearly 10 years earlier. Honestly how did they not do this sort of stuff? The player here is just a pair of gloves that can kindof pet or boop Lucky but not really cus Lucky's only interaction with the hands is that his head is awkwardly pushed around by them, and he does a little animation and sometimes says hi whenever they're in his vicinity. Basically just a game for kids. And I say that as someone who greatly enjoys most of the iconic colorful mascot platformers from the n64-ps2 era that this clearly takes a lot of inspiration from, and thinks they have a lot to offer people of all ages... Lucky’s Tale VR brings traditional 3D platforming into virtual reality with a warm, inviting charm that leans heavily on atmosphere, comfort, and accessibility. Developed by Playful Corp., the game places you just behind the protagonist, Lucky, a cheerful fox navigating a series of colorful worlds in search of his kidnapped friend. Rather than attempting to reinvent platforming mechanics, the game adapts familiar genre elements to a VR space, letting the perspective itself do much of the heavy lifting. The result is a platformer that feels immediately approachable, even to those who might hesitate to try more intense or physically demanding VR titles. One of the most striking aspects of the experience is the sense of immersion created by the fixed third-person camera. Instead of controlling the camera with a stick, you naturally lean and look around the environment, peering behind structures, gauging jump distances, and uncovering secrets by physically shifting your viewpoint. The levels resemble miniature dioramas that come alive as Lucky runs through them, and this scale—combined with the soft, stylized graphics—creates a feeling of presence that a flat-screen version could not …

The first VR platformer I played and what a wonderful experience it was. Gameplay consists of: - Story Mode: move through the levels collecting coins, diamonds and extra lives, with checkpoints - Red Coin Hunt: explore the levels more thoroughly and collect all red coins, no checkpoints - Time Trial: rush through the level and receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal, no checkpoints Most players won't find too much difficulty in the Story and Red Coin hunt, but when it comes to receiving a gold medal on all Time Trial levels, we talk 'Ghost n Goblins on the arcade'-kind of difficulty. This quickly turned the cute, fun platformer into an excruciatingly frustrated nightmare. All in all Lucky Tale VR is a fun platform game with gorgeous graphics, atmospheric music and a cute 'n nimble hero. Just forget about gold plating the time trials.

I love Super Lucky's Tale and New Super Lucky's tale. I thought I would be getting more of that. I was wrong in every way. This game starts out narrated like a children's book. It does not get better from there as the game itself is constantly loading the levels in the wrong location. It will load right under you so you look down very uncomfortably, or the orientation will change and the whole level is now loading off to your right or left and you have to fix it. Often you just can't see where you are headed. The first couple levels are very easy but what makes the other games fun is completely mission from this one.

A great platform game. Good graphics and performance. The time trials are very difficult and there is almost no margin for error. This is quite frustrating because sometimes the camera angle doesn't keep up with the character, and the character itself tends to “slip” and fall off elements it shouldn't. I gave up on trying to get gold medals in the time trials. However, I definitely recommend the story mode itself. In addition, there is a game mode where you collect red coins and there are no checkpoints throughout the level, which is a bit challenging but enjoyable. Played on Oculus Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop.
