This game is cute and all, but that's [i]all[/i] it has going for it. I was so damn bored, I just couldn't finish it. Felt like a chore. There is practically zero story. Nico, the protagonist, moves to the archipelago and wants to share a starfruit (or whatever) with everyone. That is literally it. There is no other motivation to play except milestone achievements. The gameplay is fine, I guess, so if you're someone who doesn't care about story [i]at all[/i], you could possibly still enjoy this game, but I just can't get through it, sorry.

Sprout Valley, developed by Vadzim Liakhovich and published by RedDeer.Games together with Untold Tales, presents itself as a deliberately small-scale farming experience that prioritizes calm routine over complexity. You step into the paws of Nico, a cat seeking a quiet life on a modest island, and from the beginning the game makes it clear that it is less concerned with dramatic progression and more focused on creating a gentle, repeatable rhythm. It embraces the idea of a “cozy” game wholeheartedly, stripping away many of the systems that usually define the genre in favor of something more relaxed and approachable. The gameplay loop is built around familiar farming activities such as planting crops, gathering materials, fishing, and crafting, but everything is streamlined to remove pressure. Days pass without urgency, and there are no harsh penalties or demanding objectives pushing the player forward. Instead, progress unfolds naturally as you expand your farm, unlock small improvements, and gradually shape your island into a more productive space. This simplicity makes it easy to settle into a routine, and for players looking to unwind, that consistency can be surprisingly sati…

This game will give you quests for NPCs, but it will never let you revisit these NPCs to turn in the quests. You'll feel the frustration of having these quests pile up but never be able to complete them. You visit random islands. You can't decide to visit somewhere specific. Ever! Also, you may randomly get stuck and can't move, and you must call the Rescue service for a hefty $500 charge. Getting stuck and calling for rescue feels like someone added an Unstuck feature for bugs to cover for actual bugs. So weird. The entire game is about building a seed machine in the basement, which consists of grinding nonstop to get rocks and wood to craft things, along with providing various crops. It's all fine, maybe even a tiny bit fun at first. Until you're just doing the same thing over and over. You never get to break up the monotony. The islands all begin to run together with the same experience when you visit them. You can fish, but that gets old too. After you build the basement seed maker, the credits roll. You're done. I do not recommend wasting your time with this game unless what I have outlined sounds fun.

It's a super cute, simple game. It was nothing really special to me until I was able to make my island bigger and put everything where I wanted. The graphics are cute and charming. I wish there were seasons however, things get a bit dull with only sunny days/ rainy/stormy and fog. And I wish there was more music but it's fine for what it is. It's a fun game to play in between or along with another game. There are a few bugs that are very annoying such as being locked into dialog with the NPC on your island (which forces you to restart the game) or just simply being unable to move your character. I'm enjoying it either way and the bugs aren't fun destroying.

A simple but fun farming sim with a lot of charm.

The best way I can describe my feelings towards this game is that it feels like a first draft or an early access game. There's some really cool ideas and art style, it functions as a game, but there are so many rough edges in terms of mechanics and progression and how it all fits together as a whole. The developers clearly have a lot of potential, and with more time and experience I could see them making some really great games, but this one really needed some more attention and polish and revisions based on player feedback. I've been playing it while watching tv and it works as something to keep my hands busy, and I have not had any issues or bugs playing it so on balance I'm giving it a thumbs up. It's not a game I'd say don't play (maybe buy when it's on sale), but there are definitely games out there that do a similar thing better.
