✦ AI summary

Tangledeep is a cozy, accessible roguelike with excellent pixel art, music, and gamepad support that appeals particularly well to newcomers to the genre, though it divides players on depth and design choices. Praise centers on its charming presentation, build variety, and systems like monster taming and item upgrading, but complaints focus on runs being excessively long (6-14 hours), permadeath feeling unrewarding, RNG frustration, and forced reliance on companions or ranged weapons making solo melee play punishing.

Tangledeep is a classic roguelike. It's not deep enough for me to like it. I like how it looks and sounds. I'm also surprised by how well it plays with a gamepad. There are plenty of interesting systems here reminiscent of Disgaea, like going inside an item to make it stronger. There's monster taming and breeding. The game looks cozy, so naturally it must have farming too. There's a lot of meat on those bones, but I find the bones lacking. It is a classic roguelike, which means it's more similar to Angband than to FTL. It's a dungeon crawler where you go into the dungeon, and by default there's even permadeath. The rules of permadeath are not as harsh as in some roguelikes (there's some meta-progression left, and you can leave items in storage for other characters) but I can't really tell, because in several hours of play I was never close to death. The dungeon crawling here is frankly boring. There aren't many types of enemies, the equipment and consumables do not change how you play that much, and I maxed out my class abilities in a couple of hours, which meant my tactics stopped changing. There's class emblem upgrading, but it's just a passive boost that doesn't change how yo…

It's a bit too "JRPG adjacent" for my taste but I understand that can actually be a pro for some people. It's quite fun and gives you lots of build freedom.

ok ok... ii know it a roguelike but why the F does a run take for the faster side 6-7 hours. And on the slow end it take 9-14hour (both were my time of 2 charter that both dead at the after before the final boss). is true feel very aunfulfilling to put that much hour in the a run. to then dead from from RNG or dump mechanics like the quest, dreamworld.. etc. And you might say well do not like the parma dead way. BUT THE Dev want me to play his type away so i did. i play a total of 31hours, and it just not a good roguelike.. tt more like playing a rpg/mmo but play the hard-core permanent way.. the loot is dumb... you only get 1-3 good loot item that ar eworth upgrade in the dream world... all but the game solo is actully horrenddous and you need a companison/pet to actually play the game. plus 1/4 the way threought the game you allready have everything unlock. for your class. it legit the same rotaion for everyfight. the only character you shold play is the one that give you more abilities every other class are irrelevant and less competent wise and funn wise. soo ya frick this game..... dead after speedingrun my way back after dead in the morning and still turk me 9-8hour to get b…

This is right on the cusp of actually being amazing but the game forces you into a reliance on ranged weapons and doesn't then automatically switch you back to melee which results in an ass kicking every time.

This is the most chill non-trivial traditional roguelike I've ever played. The music and art are utterly captivating from start to finish. If you're coming here with significant traditional roguelike experience, it probably isn't out of the question to beat this game in a single attempt with no deaths, but by no means does that indicate the game isn't worth it; it just isn't going to be a significant source of challenge unless you put some heavy self-imposed limits on your run. On the other hand, if you have no traditional roguelike experience at all, this game is tuned extremely well for an introductory experience that shouldn't feel insurmountable even if you die several times. As with all roguelikes, the most important thing is to learn from your deaths. Keeping with the logic of being able to appeal to newer roguelike players, the mechanics and build variety are fairly basic, but I applaud Tangledeep for letting you freely mix and match almost all abilities with its multiclassing. There was enough depth for me to sink my teeth into without immediately arriving at trivial solutions. It's not necessary to make a build as complex as the game permits, but nothing is stopp…

The gameplay is fun, each class is distinct, and the pixel art combined with the OST tie it together wonderfully.
