Melvor Idle

Got me through my graduate thesis, thank you.

Best idle game. Excellent balance of interaction versus background.

I am quite enjoying this idle game! It runs passively really well, and there doesn't seem to be a wrong way to go about it. It really scratches the itch of wanting to play an MMO without the monthly fees. There are a few skills (combat, esp) that sit right on the edge of idling. There are tools to make actually idling combat more feasible, but they're locked behind a whole bunch of other grinding, and even after a few weeks, I'm nowhere near to unlocking them. The lack of music or other sounds make it less useful as a study tool, but I just run something else on the side and it's fine.

This is probably the least idle game I've ever played that's called itself an idle game. The only thing that's "Idle" about it is maybe your township? You can go afk and grind materials sure, but if you want to actually fight things you better be watching the absolutely boring "Combat" or you will die or lose loot. (Oh, and you just randomly permanently lose items if you die, so good luck with that) Baseline you can only fight 100 things before you have to manually claim loot, at least until you clear a dungeon that is a fair bit into the game. Combat is automatic, but healing is not, and once you get automatic healing way later, it significantly reduces all healing item's effectiveness during use? Game doesn't know what it wants to do, it wants to be a zero effort runescape clone that has absolutely no animations or anything, but also call itself an idle game. 30 hours on record and most of that's from leaving it up mining overnight. What even is the point of having your mining nodes have "Health" anyways? There are free mobile games that do this better than Melvor Idle does, and Melvor Idle wants not only an initial fee, but DLC costs as well.
