About SOMA

✦ AI summary

Survive isolation in an underwater research station while grappling with existential questions about consciousness and what it means to be human. Uncover the truth behind the chaos through exploration and puzzle-solving while evading grotesque creatures and rogue AI, with no combat—only your wits and your ability to run.

SOMA is a sci-fi horror game from Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It is an unsettling story about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human.

The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people. Underwater facility PATHOS-II has suffered an intolerable isolation and we’re going to have to make some tough decisions. What can be done? What makes sense? What is left to fight for?

Enter the world of SOMA and face horrors buried deep beneath the ocean waves. Delve through locked terminals and secret documents to uncover the truth behind the chaos. Seek out the last remaining inhabitants and take part in the events that will ultimately shape the fate of the station. But be careful, danger lurks in every corner: corrupted humans, twisted creatures, insane robots, and even an inscrutable omnipresent A.I.
You will need to figure out how to deal with each one of them. Just remember there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.

✦ AI summary

Players consistently praise SOMA's excellent story, dark atmosphere, and impressive environmental design, with many ranking it among their favorite games. However, common complaints center on deliberately slow pacing through traversal mechanics like ladder climbing and door cycling that feel padded out, and gameplay that sometimes works against the narrative's impact rather than supporting it. The game is still recommended for story-focused players willing to tolerate its measured pace, though some feel the pacing undermines what could have been a stronger overall experience.

Existential horror has always felt more disturbing to me than anything that can simply jump out and scare you. The real horror is being forced to question what it means to be human what makes us who we are and where the line between human and something else actually exists. It makes you think about consciousness, identity, suffering, and whether being alive is enough to make something human. If something can think, feel fear, experience pain, and understand its own existence, does it deserve the same empathy we give another person? and if humanity is more than just a body, then what exactly is it? That kind of horror stays with you. it doesn't end when the story does. It leaves you questioning things you don't want to think about.

whoever wrote this game had some existential ♥♥♥♥ in their head and translated it beautifully. Soma will put you in positions and decision making that will reveal how you feel about what defines sentience

I would spend hours talking about this game, on how great it is, the minor issues and so on (just my subjective ideas, nothing more), however if I had to summarize it in 3 letters - wow, just wow. I would like to thank my friend for telling me to buy this and I would also like to thank myself for actually buying it. Many games I've played but this one is truly one of the few ones that is truly a psychological horror experience and doesn't contain cheap jumpscares nor does it rely on them. This game is a simple yet so complex idea at the same time. Simon can make different decisions in the game but it ultimately and unfortunately only boils down to one ending, which is sad (because I would love a reason to start a fresh game and finish it today), however replayability is still high. Do not let the release date deter you, (even if 2015 is still a young game by today's standards) and play this game before you can't. Choices don't matter, act if you were Simon in that same scenario Cheers fellas.

This is a remarkable narrative & story, with an absolutely awe-inspiring world (in terms of both level design, characterisation and atmosphere). But if you're like me and not a fan of "run-and-hide" horror you will find the gameplay a little lacking. Fortunately there are only *really* ~10 enemies in the entire game you actually pay attention to, and most of them are one-and-done "evade and move on" situations. It has the same issue basically all of these games have; the AI isn't smart enough and sometimes you'll find yourself in a corner, waiting, annoyed and impatient, until it sorts itself out. The story is a superb existential science fiction about what it means to be human after a mysterious event. You get (one of my favourite storytelling tropes) a parallel look at Simon's story (the protagonist) trying to make sense of his situation, and fulfilling his new task, and the story of what happened leading up to the games start (told through documents, blackboxes, intercoms and recordings). A rich world of science, hubris, insanity and the difficulty of really determining whether intentions are "good or bad" is shown, punctuated by impactful moments of choice around what to…

It's very well-made, creepy and with a very dark, bleak story with existential themes. That said, I was a little bit disappointed that it's only a few steps above walking sim, which I am not particularly a fan of. But regardless, a very good horror game well-worth it.
