Mouthwashing

I've played lots of games both VR and pancake both A games and independents, I want to tell you right now this game stuck with me! It really grabbed me with the story. I still think about it! Fantastic game and story line. don't miss out on it! I wish I could experience again from fresh eyes, but if you don't already have it you have the chance to do it!

Mouthwashing is one of those games that looks pretty simple at first, but gets more uncomfortable the more you think about it. I finished it in around 3 hours, yet it left me with quite a lot to unpack. At its core, it’s about a ship — maybe even a metaphor for a shared purpose — and the hierarchy of its crew: the burden of being in charge, responsibility, the choices we make and how free we really are in making them (something How Fish Is Made also explores), what we sacrifice for our goals, for other people or for a company, manipulation, selfishness, and more. The story is highly metaphorical and jumps back and forth through time. The puzzles and tension don’t really reinvent anything, but the game uses different mechanics cleverly to support the story and atmosphere. And honestly, it doesn’t need to be mechanically groundbreaking; the straightforward gameplay lets the narrative stay in focus. I also really liked how it plays with the gap between who you think these characters are and who they actually turn out to be. As the time I am writing this, I have already replayed the game three times. I've been a fan of Mouthwashing since 2024, but I decided to play it myself after getting it a couple months ago during a sale. And it still holds up till this day. This is such an unsettling, gut-wrenching horror game. With amazing writing and awesome art direction. The characters themselves are so distinct, each having their own unique role, backstory, and goal. The main highlight of this game is the way the horror is dealt with; you're not being chased by monsters, and that's because you ARE the monster. Not taking accountability for your actions and what you have done to the crew, which starts to reveal itself down the line. The 'monsters' you face being the characters you have done wrong and who are victims of your actions. I enjoy the game's pacing a lot. In my opinion, it doesn't drag, each chapter builds up and becomes more intense and disturbing, especially the horror segments revolving around the crew.
